Sometimes.....

Feb 13 '03

The Bottom Line You will simply have to read the poem to see what it is all about! No short cuts!

Sometimes I feel
Like the very last leaf
On that high old oak tree
Brown, clinging, neglected
Alone on the very old tree

Once I was green
And pulsing with life
I, too, swung out far with the breeze
But now, like the leaf
I am just hanging on
Waiting for one last quick freeze

And as the leaf falls, so too will I
One more wintry wind
Will snap free the stand
And neither the leaf nor I
Will be too sad
To say goodbye

II

The cold wind blew
“Twas almost dawn
The leaf pulled loose
Drifted down to the lawn

I adjusted a pillow behind my head
On the sterile white steel hospital bed
In the dim light of dawn I closed my eyes
I knew it would be no great surprise
When they find me here with no breath left
A few, perhaps, might feel bereft
But I’m not sad
In fact I’m glad
My years are long, my life’s been had

As I lay there so quietly
I thought I passed on silently
But wait a minute. My thoughts were heaving
Guess I was wrong for I’m not leaving
My heart was beating a steady rhythm
My lungs were keeping right up there with ‘em

Heck, I thought I might see them wiping a tear
When they come in the room and find me here
But, oh well, it must be true
I still have some earthly chores to do
So I rang for the nurse, and I told her, “Hey,
Could someone please bring me a breakfast tray?
I’ve got lots of healing to do today.”

The nurse looked out the window, her face aglow
“Will you look at that, it’s starting to snow.
Your breakfast will be here soon, OK?
And you are looking much better by the way.”

As for me, at long last I finally knew
Things would not go as I wanted them to
So I was given a little more life to live
And I’d better repay with all I could give

I swung my legs over the side of the bed,
And landed with a thud on the side of my head
An ironic joke came along with the fall
For I’m getting my wish after all.

Good bye
