by helpimaddicted | Mar 25 '03
The goldfish bowl has become an icon in our society, but just how well do these bowls provide healthy homes for our pets?

I work at a local fish store and I can tell you horror stories of people wanting to buy goldfish for bowls. I always go into the speel of proper goldfish care and unfortunatly it doesnt work. Sometimes it does tho. Anyways unfortunatly it seems im the only one who cares, my coworkers couldnt care less and still believe goldfish can live in bowls. I have said things several different times but it hasnt work, tonight i printed out the article and various other websites on proper goldfish care and i will present it to all of them. I just hope it works for the sake of the fish.

Great review, I agree wholeheartedly with everything you say. This is something that really bugs me, since I deal with the fish-buying public every day. Almost daily I have discussions with customers, trying to talk them out of buying just a bowl for their goldfish (I wish we didn't sell those accursed bowls, but I have no control over that). Sometimes it works, sometimes not. The other day a lady wanted some goldfish and a small bowl for her grandson. When I explained the proper care and housing, and the long-term committment needed for a goldfish, she replied that her grandson was moving in a week and a half, and it was just to amuse him until then. Who knows what they were going to do with it then? I get that all the time: "oh, it's just for my kid, I don't care if it doesn't live long". People like that totally disgust me.

You know what? Your review has gained my respect, so into my WOT you go.

We had fish for approximately 7 years. Currently we have cats. My youngest has been asking for fish. This review is well written and helpful. Thanks for sharing!

a couple small aquariums but the cleaning ended up being my job so no fish any more, LOL.

We're a cat family anyways.

Wonderful, Caring Advice (Reply to this comment)

I have never been a goldfish keeper, but have been through a couple of rounds of tropicals, large and small varieties.

What you describe is similar to keeping a child in a four foot airless box. They may survive, but they certainly won't thrive. Thank you for informing those who care and just don't know.

Thanks!! Very helpful review! My kids are asking for fish, and I never did think that those goldfish bowls were good for much more than throwing pennies in at the end of the day!

..for your nice comments. I'm somewhat new to this community (though I've lurked here for years and written in the past), so it was a great surprise to get feedback so soon. Also, it's nice to see that there are others that support the ideas in the reviews and don't just follow the "smaller, cheaper and easier" trend with fishcare. Thanks for making me feel welcome!

It was refreshing to read your review. From fish to other pets, confining spaces drive me crazy. I often shudder at pet stores and when I see people who don't provide enough for their pets. There's the ongoing controversies over betta bowls, which have become so popular.

I really enjoyed your review!
