I was on a mission. A mission to find the ultimate comforter set for my guest bedroom. We rarely have overnight guests but I use that room as my getting ready for work room and my scrap booking room so I want it to look nice. And as of last week I had just an ugly old quilt on the bed and no bed skirt. It wasn’t very attractive at all. After much shopping around, I finally found what I was looking for on JCPenney.com and it was a good buying experience.
The website
To access JCPenney’s online store, just go to www.jcpenney.com and all the items in the store are at your fingertips.
The JCPenney online store main page displays the main promotions that are currently in effect with the other new items underneath. Users can view additional details for each offer by clicking the picture or text box associated with each. The online store displays tabs which contain the various product categories from which you can choose. They are: women, lingerie, juniors, SEPHORA, jewelry, shoes, men, kids & baby, bed & bath, window, furniture, home accents, house wares, swim, and gifts & registry.
Clicking on each link brings you directly into the main page for that category where a submenu is displayed which allows you to narrow the items that display. For example, clicking the windows tab displays the window fashions page and a submenu that contains the following items: curtains, drapes, blinds, shades, valances, hardware, etc. From there you can shop till you drop within the category or select another tab to go to the main page or another category. You can also enter the specific product number into the shop from our catalogs field or search for something like “blue duvet cover” by entering that into the search field and clicking the Go button.
Checkout
Last Thursday I finally found that elusive comforter set I was looking for by browsing the bed & bath category. It seemed like a good deal to me so I selected the size and quantity and clicked the Add to Bag button. When I was finished shopping, I made sure everything that I wanted was still in my shopping bag by clicking the View Shopping Bag button. When I did that it displayed a page with a small image of the comforter, the price, quantity, and total. It also has a small checkbox for removing items from the shopping bag. At this point if you have a discount or promotional a box needs to be checked so you can enter the code on the next screen. Do that and then click the Proceed to Checkout button to go to the screen where the promotion code is entered. After that click the Proceed to Checkout button again to go to the login screen. On this screen you either register a new account or enter user ID and password to access an existing account. Since I have a long history of ordering at JCPenney.com, I just log into my existing account.
Shipping & Payment Options
As I am a returning customer my billing and shipping addresses are saved by the system so I do not have to re-enter any of that information. There are however links to change billing and shipping information if it needs to be updated. You can also choose to have your order shipped to a local store. This saves a few dollars on shipping costs but you still have to go pick it up. I opted to have my order shipped to my home because the mall is kind of a pain to get to so it was worth it to me to pay the additional $4 to have it delivered directly to my door.
Shipping rates are based on the total cost of the order. As my order was over $100 the cost was $18.95 for home and $14.95 for store delivery. UPS express was $40. The lowest shipping rate is $5.95 for up to a $25 order and is $39.95 for orders over $500. I personally think the shipping rates are expensive. My order consisted of a comforter, a pillow, and a bed skirt and was nearly $20. I think that’s a lot to pay for shipping. Fortunately I found a really good online coupon code that saved me 30% on the comforter so it all sort of washed out in the end. Still it would have been nice to save 30% AND pay a decent shipping rate. At any rate, shipping was really fast. I ordered on Thursday morning and my order was delivered on Saturday morning which was amazingly fast and I never expected it to arrive so quickly.
Payment
The next step in the checkout process is the order summary page. This page displays all the order details, shipping and billing addresses, and includes the shipping fee and tax amounts. This is also the payment page where you click either the Credit Card button or the Gift Card button. I paid by Visa so I used the Credit Card button. Again, since I’m a returning customer, my credit card info was already on file so I just had to choose my Visa card from a list and click the Place Order button to complete my order. If your credit card info changes or you’re not comfortable with JCPenney keeping your credit card info on file, there are two options for editing and deleting the credit info from your account. JCPenney accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express as well as the JCPenney credit card. Just enter the name on the card, the card number, and the expiration date. For VISA, the special number on the back is also required. After the order has been placed an order confirmation page displays onscreen and an email is sent to the email address on file. The email contains all order information as well as a link to track your order. An additional email is sent when the order is shipped and you can also log onto JCPenney.com at any time to track the order.
Packaging
My order from JCPenney arrived in 2 boxes. The comforter came in one box that it was squeezed into and the pillow came in a box that was quite a bit bigger than the pillow so it was easy to remove. Both items were wrapped in plastic. There was nothing remarkable about the packaging.
Other cool things on the site
There are not many cool things on the JCPenney site. There is a Save/Retrieve Bag option that allows you to save your bag and retrieve it at a later date when you’re ready to finish shopping. You can view online catalogs or the current sale ad and track your order and that’s about all. There are some other links that all other sites have, such as customer service, contact information and things like that, but nothing dreadfully exciting.
Returns
I’ve never returned anything that I’ve ordered from JCPenney.com. However if you are unsatisfied with your purchase it can be returned to JCPenney via mail or UPS or you can return it to any JCPenney store’s catalog desk.
Bottom line
The JCPenney online store is not terribly exciting. It’s actually rather utilitarian but it allows me to shop and find the items I’m looking for quickly and easily and shipping is ridiculously fast and the whole experience is always very reliable, efficient and fast. I’ll be shopping online with JCPenney for years to come.
