Pros: Nice atmospherics, carefully planned production, well tuned madness
Cons: Dark and more dark, if you want something cheery, this isn't the joint for you
The Bottom Line: This works for hanging with your goth friends who have a taste for the dark side. It is shivering sex music, not for the faint hearted.

| deaser26's Full Review: City of Night - Fog People |
A Lean and Mean look at Seattle's own Fog People and their new release City of Night.
Seattles Fog People make good on their promise of a sometimes humorous, always throbbing and often enlightening look into Seattles current underground flow. In the course of sifting through new Seattle music, the Fog People came to me; there were some names of note and some interesting moments. Michael Hayes White is the founder of the feast, a Seattle sound and lighting guy moving to the other side of the glass. His credits include work on a parody of Josh Whedons Angel called Cherub. He has also done sound production for bands like Informatik and Battery Cage.
There are guest appearances from: The Fading Collection, The Ticklejunk Horns, Alicia Dara, Beehive, Lustercoat, Suckapunch, Wildturkey, Soft Machines Nick Evans, Asleep at the Wheels David Earl Miller and Louisiana funk and soul man CT Thompson. This list reads like a whos who of Seattle backstreet music collaborators.
And of course the idea of theater never really leaves your side listening to the Fog People. City of Night is a concept album with concept design and a lot of clever whispered words. Throughout the albums music, there are whispered nothings, very sexual, leading and often followed up by a musical statement. The musical ideas begin with emotion or dialog and then flow into song, as with For No Good Reason At All and the title cut. The theater leads into the music.
The first song catches your attention with some Milesesque trumpet work from the Ticklejunk Horns Walter Fogg, and then the rhythm section on Exxx takes over and the vocalists come in for a couple of eargasms. There is a pulse of NIN riding through with songs tailored for video production, and there is a feeling of the avant-garde at work as well.
There is a streak of Riot running rampant through with vocals on songs like With Kisses, Ms. Mad Love and Feel Like giving you lady vocals with just a touch of crazy or perhaps obsessive pulsing on the underside of them. There is a lot of mood and atmosphere with electronic touches that definitely feel like NIN, but there isnt that metallic feel that would lead you to a frenzy, more like a Martini with Dino. Songs like Fate Points the Finger and Kommodities of the Fetish are rich with soundscape, but not crazed.
With music that is clearly influenced by the Manchester post-punk as well as Memphis old skool, this is well worth a listen, and a spin when you want to slip on your sailing shoes and fly into bed with one or more loved ones.
