| knotheadusc's Full Review: Lysol All Purpose Cleaner With Bleach |
I don't remember when or why I purchased Lysol All Purpose Cleaner With Bleach. Perhaps it was on a busy day at the commissary, when I was in a hurry to get out of there and just threw something in the cart. As I wrote in today's review of Lysol Cling, I generally like Lysol's cleaning products. I've come to expect excellence from that brand. And bleach is a very effective cleaner. Nevertheless, I've been trying to use up my bottle of Lysol All Purpose Cleaner With Bleach for the longest time. Once I finish using this product, I don't plan to buy it again.
What it does
Lysol All Purpose Cleaner With Bleach removes tough food stains, mildew, and soap scum. It's also a powerful germ killer, that easily slays Salmonella choleraesuis, mold, athletes foot fungus, and Herpes Simplex Virus Types 1 and 2.
Where to use it
This product should be used on countertops, floors, appliance exteriors, glazed ceramic tile, sealed grout, tubs, sinks, toilet bowls, and other hard non-porous surfaces. It truly is an all purpose cleaner.
How to use it
Spray 4-6 inches from surface to be cleaned. Let stand for 5 minutes, wipe clean, and rinse.
My experiences
As I hinted in my title, I don't really like this product, even though it's a very powerful cleaner. The main reason I don't like Lysol All Purpose Cleaner With Bleach is that whenever I use it, I feel like I'm killing a gnat with an Uzi. It's way too strong. The cleaner has a very strong bleach scent and corresponding super powerful vapors to go along with that scent. Consequently, when I use this product, I feel like I'm nuking my house with bleach. I have to spray the stuff and leave the room because the vapors are suffocating. I have mild asthma and those bleach fumes make it hard for me to breathe.
Another reason I don't like this product is that it's hard to know when I've rinsed it away enough so that it doesn't put bleach spots on my towels, washcloths, and clothes. I've ruined a few washcloths and t-shirts because I used this stuff and didn't rinse it away completely enough... mainly because I was trying to escape the fumes.
And finally, while I'm all for keeping things clean, there is such a thing as overkill when it comes to killing germs. As someone who has a master's degree in public health and used to work for a state public health agency, I know that we can be too aggressive in our efforts to kill germs. Bodies need to be exposed to some germs so that they know how to deal with them appropriately. We were never meant to live in a sterile environment; that's why we have immune systems. There are some situations when it's important to be germ free, but short of being in an operating room, most of us don't need to kill every germ to stay healthy.
Lysol All Purpose Cleaner With Bleach is certainly a very powerful and effective household cleaner. But its label is also full of warnings about hazards to humans and domestic animals. This product is very harmful if it's swallowed or comes into contact with your skin or eyes. It also has the potential to ruin clothes. You shouldn't use Lysol All Purpose Cleaner if you have heart or respiratory conditions. If you have sensitive skin, you should wear gloves when using this cleanser. Because of the strong bleach fumes, this product should only be used in a well-ventilated area.
Other warnings
Avoid contact with clothes, fabric, wood, carpet, painted and paper surfaces, and finished floors. Avoid prolonged contact with metal, oil, porcelain, plastic laminate, and marble. Be sure to rinse thoroughly and DO NOT use this cleanser with products that contain ammonia. Do not reuse the empty container. Rinse the container before you dispose of it.
In conclusion
As you might have guessed, I think using this product is a lot of work. I also think that unless you have unusual cleaning needs, this product is probably too strong and may ultimately cause more problems than it solves. Moreover, this product is potentially dangerous for humans and animals. So, even though Lysol All Purpose Cleaner With Bleach is certainly a very good cleaner, I can't recommend it for most people.
