----------------

Every night, she and Frank converged for anything that forced itself into their vulnerable minds.

Janice became more and more inflamed, while crawling within the sandstorm of passion. She never had this manner of experience before. She had sex before, with different people, but she never had this type of relationship -- where it was nothing but lovemaking.

The bedsheets had not been straightened out in the week since she met him. Why bother? They would be strewn apart hours later, when she and her friend went out to play those secret games that make sense only to them.

She was making love to him. The thoughts within her head were stuck in one gear, the lever that adjusts her thoughts rusted and stuck in one position, its natural wandering stalled.

They faced each other upon the mattress, her legs enveloped around his waist, his hands cradling the curve of her lower back. Their eyes ambled over the flushed expressions of each other, as their bodies caressed. Sweat blanketed their bodies, as it would within any humid environment. A hot summer day would force a person to feel lazy, to feel unwilling to move oneself anywhere, yet in this situation, such static feelings were washed away by the primal desire for intimacy.

No words passed between them this afternoon. Only the act was presented. They merely watched each other, felt the sensations that swam around their auras, that pounded their bones, that tickled their nerves.

She didn’t want to stop. She wanted more and more. But she wanted to avoid drowning in those feelings.

A tantalizing gloom crept over her superficially joyous state. After a time, she wondered if she would ever be able to extract herself from this state, without inflicting pain on herself, or anyone else………

Her body ached from her movements, and from his presence inside of her, but her mind began to sicken, and it began to wander away from reality. No longer could she think properly; her reflections upon her past, and on her future, rotted like vegetables hidden away in the back of a fridge.

The point was reached where it was more than a little fooling around. Orgasms were nothing. They made love until they were too exhausted to move any longer. They tried almost any position that was effective. Everything that they exhibited towards each other gave voice to all of the dark, secretive longings that sobbed from within one’s soul, while less passionate, more reasonable feelings were shown to the public.

And then, after they could speak with their bodies no more, they rested.

“……… uh…..”, Frank muttered. His voice was dry from what seemed like hours of an inhibiting of words. “….want me to turn on the radio?”

She had an answer, but her throat was in low gear. Sure, if you like, Frank. But she was unable to spit it out.

Frank didn’t bother. He was too weak to adjust his position anyway……….

Later, Janice regained the ability to breathe more calmly. “I ….. I can turn on the radio if you like………..”

“Ah, if you want.”, he said.

“We aren’t getting anywhere with this, are we?”, she smiled. “We’re stuck to each other……. Sweat… and other things…..I think it would hurt for us to move.”

They ended up tightening their embrace.

“Happy that you had the day off, babe.”, he said.

“Yea, really……. I’m such a bloody nymphomaniac.”, she quipped. “I’d skip the wedding for a bit of shagging, I think!”

“Yes, you are quite the little vixen, aren’t you?”, teasing her.

“Frank……….. I’ve… never had this kind of experience before.”, she giggled. “I… feel like I was a virgin, and have just been introduced to sex for the first time. I’m liking it too much, you know….. I don’t want it to stop…….. “

“I feel the same way, babe.......” Babe. What was the meaning of that word, behind the flattery……?

“Do you... really?”, she sighed. “Don’t most guys just use a girl once and go off for a new one… and leave the old girl hurt and confused?”

“Maybe some do... but I don’t.”

She smiled, sorrowful. “Yea?” She wanted to believe that. “All the words that you say, all the feelings that you made me feel…….. Are you aware of all that you did?” “Janice…. I’m not stupid.”, he commented. “I know that you feel something…. I mean, it’s the same for me too. Lately, I felt a lot of emotions due to you, as well. I haven’t been with anyone in a while now, and… then you came along, and …. I sense something in you that appeals to me. Not the same as my last girlfriend……. How about you? How do you feel?”

Janice did not respond.

“I mean….. “, Frank continued, allowing Janice to speak on her own time. “… it’s only natural for people to just want sex. It’s not awful to feel that way…. It’s how you express those feelings that is the main issue…….” He trailed off, feeling as if Janice was holding something back.

“Do you know what it’s like to be lonely?” Janice asked the question, moving her face away from his, before awkwardly snapping it back, understanding that he had to see, not just hear, what she was feeling.

“How do you mean…..?”

“Watching everyone passing you by, pretending to deny your existence, while you constantly ask yourself what sort of strange things they do in their world, and why you’re not allowed in.”

“Hey, that sounds awfully depressing……”, he commented. He knew that there was a crack in her soul.

“Maybe …it isn’t as bad as all that, I don’t know….“, a confused sigh. “I’ve not been on a date in over three years, Frank.....”

He felt a twinge of disbelief.

“..... and I feel goddamn lonely.”, Janice continued. “I don’t expect you to understand it. I don’t even understand it myself!”

Frank never felt that isolated from the world, true. But he does know what it is like to feel out of the loop, sometimes. Like that night at the club, with a drunk, abrasive friend, and people he didn’t’ know. That’s why he found himself drawn to this strange, quirky, interesting girl……..

“Remember what I said to you that first night? That I wouldn’t use you like some of those other girls?”, she sighed. “Well, I think I betrayed you, my friend. I feel like I have used you. I’ve forgotten everything; all the little details, so everything looks the same. It could have been you. It could have been another guy. It would have all been the same -- I would have taken him home, I would have gotten what I wanted. All I wanted was to get laid, Frank! All I wanted was to have somebody touch me! All I wanted was to have somebody want to touch me, to tell me that I’m not just some freak of nature! I thought that I was going to grow old without love of any kind. Better to have sordid one-night stands and ill-formed affairs than nothing at all…………..”

Frank watched her speak. Her words were too raw to be anything other than utterly real. He ran his fingertips along the strands of her hair.

“I know what you’re going to say, Frank… “, she trembled. Her voice wasn’t angry, it was helpless; helpless to her feelings. “….. but, you don’t have to worry about it! You’re not going to go three years without somebody kissing you good night, or without a romantic evening. You can walk out this door and meet someone tonight, probably… and, you never know, you could marry her, for all I know!” She was growing upset. Not willing to grasp that she was possibly giving him the idea to do just that, due to the alienating power of her words. Yet…….

“Hey, Janice….”, he whispered. “This wasn’t nothing at all…..I met someone who is really cool. Someone who is funny. Someone who tries her best to be considerate of anyone else. Someone who has a true heart. Now, that’s not someone you meet everyday. Christ, Rebecca’s uptight as hell…….jealous……nothing like you!”

“How could you see that, Frank?”, she sighed. “All we did was have sex for a week……”

“Yes… yes, we did… but it’s okay. I like you! I’m not some dumb teenager….I’m not going to dump you and move on after I got my thrills……this is something that we had together. You don’t regret it, I hope…..”

“No, no, I don’t…..” They gazed at each other. Janice stretched her arm across his frame, to turn on the radio, but she did not avert her eyes away from him.

She pressed the buzzer alongside Frank’s name.

No reply.

Tried again. Still no answer.

Her heavy heels prepared to return her into the twilight, until a muffled voice finally emanated from the speaker.

“Hello?”

“Oh..... hi, it’s me, Rebecca.”

The sounds from the other end of the speaker seemed hesitant. “ah... oh, um, hi! What’s up?”

“Can I see you?”, suspicious.

“Oh.... sure, just hold on a few minutes, okay?”

She knew it. Janice was with him. One minute became five. Then another three. Then the door finally opened.

She ran up to the third floor, to knock on Frank’s door.

“Hi”, Frank greeted, wearing nothing except for his shorts. “Um, sorry for the lack of attire.....”

Rebecca slowly makes a path for herself, inside the hallway.

“Where’s Janice?”, she said, quietly.

“Janice? Um.....”,He wanted to lie, but his inner self would not permit such a betrayal. “ um... I didn’t realize that you were......”

“I’m here, Rebecca.”, a faint voice spoke, lost within the zigzag of walls.

Rebecca followed the voice, while Frank, mystified, paced behind her.

“Couldn’t you have at least waited until later, Rebecca?”, he asked, feeling embarrassed at this infiltration of a private sphere.

Janice was still in Frank’s bed, as both her lover and her lover’s friend, entered that private realm. Janice had wrapped her body with the bedsheet; the gesture came from natural modesty, although she was far more amused and curious than embarrassed from Rebecca’s entrance.

“You arrived at such an appropriate moment.”, Janice grinned, hoping to convey a playfulness to the situation.

“Rebecca.....”, Frank interrupted, feeling manipulated by his friend’s invasion. “I.... why are you here?”

She turned around. “To see my friends, of course.”, she spoke, in a mock obliviousness.

“Oh, no! No, you can’t get away with that crap... not again! Janice upsets you, admit it! I could tell that you were jealous when I mentioned her a few nights ago, just be honest with yourself. I suppose you’re going to start slapping her around a bit... tell her to get your filthy hands off of me.”

“Frank, it’s not.....!”, Rebecca tried to emphasize.

Janice hid her face under the sheet, not wanting to witness the outcome of this argument. Hoping that she wouldn’t tear up while watching what she unknowingly wrought.

“Christine!”, isolating that name. “You were like that with her too. You wanted her out of my life, and you were so happy when we broke up!”

“Please ... don’t!”, she sobbed. “I’m not.... I’m not angry with Janice. I’m not wanting to break anyone up......”

Her eyes regarded anew Janice’s frame, outlined by the bedsheet. “ If I look at her long enough, in the same room as you ...... those feelings that I get, helplessly, would evaporate. I’m sure of it.”

Janice forgot why she was in the bed. She rose from her position, wanting to console her, to tell her that she didn’t need to try so vigorously to heal herself. That it would take time. Janice was worried that Rebecca would break down, would melt down into pure anger at her past, confusion at her present.........

“Well, maybe you’ll not be so jealous anymore then...”, Frank said. “.... and let me live my own life!”

“I’m sorry!”, Rebecca cried. “I know that ..... I caused a lot of problems.....”

Janice wanted to heal the wounds. She didn’t care about the passion any more.

“Um, guys.... perhaps I should get dressed... if we are to continue this visit. I feel pretty out of place right now....... “

“I hope that you’re happy.”, Frank pouted. “She’s probably going to get dressed and then walk right out of my life.....”

“I’m sorry, I’m very sorry....”, she sighed.

“You’ve done it again. Why are you my friend? Why do you treat me this way?”

“That’s just the way I am.”, rocking slightly on the sofa’s armrest. “I just don’t comprehend why you didn’t leave me sooner.”

“I don’t leave friends like that.”

“But when have I ever treated you with any decency? All I ever did was pass around rude comments and criticize your choice in women! What real friend have I been to you?”

Frank’s next words were mere reflex. “Don’t say that, Rebecca. You make yourself out to be a horrible person who doesn’t deserve to be liked.”

She removes herself from the armrest, cowering close to the wall, her back facing him. “I don’t deserve to be liked.”

The saliva in Frank’s mouth soured, as if he could taste the very words that his friend gave to him. He realized that the flavor was unappealing. Before, he was tolerant of Rebecca’s behavior, but now he wasn’t so sure that it was worth al the agony just to find those rare splendid moments.

“This isn’t any good at all......”, Frank muttered. “Maybe... we ought to lay low for a while, give ourselves... some time alone.......”

Rebecca did not speak. Cells in her body sobbed, but she ignored them.

“I think that I was expecting too much from you.”, he drawled, pausing in between every few words, forcing himself to speak. “I... I suppose I took you for granted. I always thought that you would be around for me -- when I didn’t have another woman in my life. At least I knew that I could come back to you....even if all that we did together was act like two best pals.”

Janice stepped out of the bedroom, dressed in her daytime clothes again. She was the one who felt like the third wheel in this scenario, as two friends were no longer on healthy terms with each other.

“......don’t say that.”, Rebecca commented, her voice growing harsh. “You... you make it sound as if there could have been something more between us. I don’t want to be reminded of that......”

“Well.... there could have been, but you weren’t ready for something like that...... or at least you never gave me that impression.”

Rebecca felt pain, clenching her teeth so hard that they could have shattered. “Maybe because I never felt that way about you.........”

“Then why were you so concerned about the two of us. Why did you ... act the way you did because of me and her. Obviously, you were......”

“Don’t say it!!”, Rebecca exclaimed. “I know that you’re going to say that I’m jealous! But... just don’t say it. “

Janice understood.

“Hey guys.... “, Janice spoke, drawing attention to herself.

The other two smiled mournfully to her.

“Maybe I should just get out of your hair for a while.”, Rebecca quietly confided to Janice.

“No... no way.”, Janice spoke. “You shouldn’t have to worry about anything..... if.. if you ever want to talk, it’s okay.”

“Look, I know that I’m messing everything up for you guys.”, she sighed. “I.... you guys deserve to be happy, or at least do whatever you like...... so I’ll be lonely, so what?”

It was Janice’s turn to feel upset. “Rebecca! Don’t say that.......”

“Ah, I’ve always been lonely.....” Her eyes watered slightly. “I allowed my past to consume me..... and it’s affected all of my friendships......... I’m worse than the both of you combined.”

Janice felt her own eyes water. Yet again, Rebecca, the woman who tried to spoil Janice’s passionate secret affair, successfully wounded her. “No, no, no! At least you had Frank as a friend........”

“Ah, it was bullsh*t!”, wiping her eyes. “I’m a rotten friend.......”

“Well.... you can always try again.... with the both of us......”

Rebecca looks more closely at the woman as she made her request. “Janice?”

She knew what Rebecca indirectly referred to. “Yes. I know. When I see other people cry, I feel the urge to cry. It’s contagious ...... like yawning......”

“Oh, my, I only make things worse and worse.”, Rebecca moaned.

“No, please......we... we could try to be friends, you know.”, Janice said.

“Are you sure......?”

“Well, considering that I’ve gotten to know you both the past few days..in, um, very interesting ways……… why hurt ourselves with all of these weird feelings? Maybe…. Maybe we ought to take a walk, or something. Relax a little bit…….”
