The Bottom Line: Warning...just avoid GMAC.

I recently had an experience that confirmed to me that GMAC offers miserable customer service and deplorable business ethics.
After decades of maintaining a perfect payment record on my mortgage, a terrible bank error (a technical error in automated billpay) caused my mortgage payment to be late. My bank accepted full responsibility for the error and wrote a detailed and certified letter describing their mistake to GMAC, as well as to Countrywide, the lender who owns the mortgage on my vacation home (the bank error produced the same problem on both homes). I promptly received a reply letter from Countrywide confirming that they had reversed all late charges and withdrawn the late notice from my credit report. They were understanding and congenial throughout the whole process. HOWEVER, GMAC failed miserably in this simple and clear-cut issue. Not only were they rude and incompetent in their phone communications with myself and my banker while we were addressing the bank error, but they are also unwilling to withdraw the late fees and amend the late notice on my credit report. They acted like they were doing me a great favor by giving me the address of the credit bureaus so I could send them a letter to attach explaining the error. Ironically, in the letter they stated that their policy is to amend credit "only in cases of natural disaster or spousal death". I pointed out to them that I have kept a perfect payment record through BOTH my husband's passing last year and through Hurricane Rita in 2005, but the best the thug-like customer "service" agent could do was say, "I guess you've had a bad couple of years! (chuckle)"
Sure, the days of the "friendly face" of business is over, but GMAC's poor business ethic and pathetic customer service is unforgivable. I have happily taken my good credit and my loan to Countrywide after the wonderful way they handled this issue.
