The Bottom Line Know what you want, narrow the field to 2 or 3 different vehicles...and expect a smaller trade-in, you'll legitimately save some dough. The treatment you'll receive is well worthwhile.

The Costco Auto Program puts you into a rarified position with the specialized Costco sales reps. at most dealerships....PROVIDED you have done your "homework" beforehand, and NOT begun dealing with a salesperson that does NOT specialize in the Costco program.
When you have registered online at the dealership(s) carrying the vehicles you are interested in, the Costco specialist will contact you via phone, and set up an appointment for you to come and see him, about the car.
The salespersons must be held to a higher standard, as they tended to be super courteous, friendly, NO pressure...and if you choose to buy elsewhere, it seemed "OK". There was no ransom held of the driver's license, car keys, or any other ploys to keep us there, and it was all very relaxed.
The jist of the program, is a given amount OVER dealer invoice...about 500 bucks, on any car they had. This was about a 1700 dollar savings on our 2001 Toyota Corolla S
(a separate review of mine), or a price BELOW Ford's Focus...a "cheaper" auto at first blush.
The biggest "rub" is with the trade-in...an area where they can play a lot of games, and give you more, but at the expense of a higher purchase price. When it's all said and done, Costco will lower the initial cost of the new car MORE, than the reduced amount your trade-in receives. A net savings over traditional transactions...and one achieved with little (if none) mental games, arm-wrestling, or grief usually associated with car-buying.
