Dr Dev's Top 10 Monster Movies

The Bottom Line The scariest thing of all is the Bottom Line in a thong....

Is there any better genre out there than horror? It's so hard to narrow the best monsters down to 10 when there have been so many greats.

You will note the absence of Dracula here. That would be because he has already gotten his own separate list here:
The Warped Doc's Favorite 10 Bloodsuckers

I'm sure there probably 20 more that have slipped my mind, so please do leave a comment if you notice any blatant omissions.. I may not agree with you, but then again, I just might. heh.

Frankenstein ~ I just don't think any list would be complete without a Boris Karlof vehicle, and this is one of his most memorable roles. Who doesn't love the monster who was put together from pieces-parts out of a graveyard and given life via electricity? Just too damn cool.

The Exorcist ~ Ok so we're spose to be talking about monsters here, but if that damn green puke that flies out Linda Blair's mouth isn't considered a monster, well... too bad! Ewwwww! Fine, then consider the demon who possess her the monster, but really it's that puke that everyone cringed in horror from.

I was a Teenage Werewolf ~ Bite me. I know this old Michael Landon flick has been reviled time and again in print, but it was one of my faves as a teen. I still get a big kick out of watching Landon turn into a werewolf and run through that ravine.

The Thing (1951) ~ I like the remake of this one, but it's the original that gets my final vote. Call me a child of the 50s, but all those old ones just have something that modern day horror just doesn't have much of: atmosphere. The arctic felt more isolated in this original, which made the discovery of a spaceship that much scarier...

The Brotherhood of the Wolf ~ Brotherhood of the Wolf is about things being amiss in 17th century France. Very amiss. Folks are being torn apart by a mysterious beast! Things initially point to a wolf, and may lead you to believe there might be a werewolf running about the countryside... don't bet on it! The Chevalier de Fronsac and his blood-brother Mani are sent by the King to see to gather clues and make sketches and such..and to prepare the body of the beast for keeping once it is killed.

The Blob (1958) ~ Steve McQueen was such a stud, wadn't he? Well that's just what it would take to stop this blob of an alien from suckin' down all life on Earth... The remake was good, but again, it just can't compare to the original when I was a kid.

Bubba Ho-Tep ~ One of Bruce Campbell's warped entries into the horror genre. What we have here is Elvis, you see, only he's old now and in a retirement home somewhere in East Texas, after having switched identities with an Elvis impersonator some years back to get away from all the hoopla. Now nobody believes him... except for JFK. But the thing is JFK is also in the home and very old..and he's black.. and missing a part of his brain which was removed and is being kept in DC somewhere. And oh yeah... Elvis has this growth on his err 'boomstick' that he is a bit obsessed with. heh If all that isn't enough to pique your interest, let's toss in an ancient Egyptian mummy running amok and sucking souls out of the elderly. Yes folks, a Mummy in Texas. That's Bubba Ho-Tep.

28 Days Later ~ Monkeys have been infected with something called 'Rage'. Some idiots come in and release them against all warnings....Where this succeeds is that it concentrates on the fear and horror of the situation rather than on trying to top the latest FX masterpiece. It tells it's story pretty straight forward and relies on us to use our imagination, to put ourselves in the same situation mentally. I wish more films would trust us enough to do this.

Hellraiser ~ Clive Barker. Oh yeah. The master of the macabre came up with possibly the most warped scenario ever known to the movie industry. Those Cenobites from hell were just ooh oooh scary... gotta love Pinhead, man. Not for the faint of heart at all.

Young Frankenstein ~ Now ya knew I'd have more than one comedy on this list. This is me we're talkin about. Deal. This 1974 Mel Brooks hit will have ya rollin and peein' yer pants. Gene Wilder, Marty Feldman, Peter Boyle, Madeline Kahn... to name just a few.

Oh. Where you going?... Oh, you men are all alike. Seven or eight quick ones and then you're out with the boys to boast and brag

~~~~~~~~~Honorable Mention~~~~~~~~~~~
Transylvania 6500
