Raising The Dead (Second-Chance W/O)

Oct 16 '03

The Bottom Line What a way to make a few extra pennies.

I've been in re-write write-offs before but never one that raised the dead . . . so to speak. It's perfect for Halloween. In order to keep (somewhat) within the rules I'm quoting a news item someone just e-mailed me. I'm not sure if it's real or imagined or just a joke, but here goes:

With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person which almost went unnoticed last week. Larry La Prise, the man who wrote "The Hokey Pokey," died peacefully at age 93. The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in. And then the trouble started.

Have you noticed that when you post a new review how fast it flies through the general Just In section. They don’t stay in view very long in the New Reviews sections for individual categories, either. Before we know it we find our wonderful review buried at the bottom of the archives listings on our profile pages. It's just like it's been put in a crypt, and only a diligent reader or the new Epinions hyperlinks can resurrect them for us.

Trust12345, our host for this Second Chance Write-Off is celebrating his first year anniversary on the site, and now you can get that second chance for one of those neglected reviews of yours. Maybe it's one that you always wished had gotten a little more attention the first time around; update it if you need to. Or, maybe it's one that you're extra proud of and you want to bring it back to view again. Well, here's your chance to do just that. John has opened this write-off to anyone who wants to join in, so get busy and read the rules at http://www.epinions.com/content_3544490116 .

John says we can "Use this opportunity to revive one of your own (or even someone else's) forgotten or little-read essays or reviews." Look through your archives and find a candidate (or two) and post the links in one of the clever ways that he's suggested. His own example of how to accomplish the task at hand is superb. He has a wonderful way with words and his classical music reviews, his travel reviews and his very amusing personal jottings are a joy to read. Happy first Epinions' Anniversary, Trust12345.

In tribute to a guy who rides all over northern Europe on a one-wheeled bicycle (a unicycle, really), I'm dragging up a review of A Really "Special" Bike . It got the fewest reads of any that I've done since I started adding reviews back after EBD. There were only 36 member reads on this one, but it had 823 hits overall and it gave me quite a healthy Income Share. I was amazed to find myself among Epinion's top earning reviews for Outdoors a month or six ago. For someone who writes (mostly) queer book reviews, that's something to cheer about even if no one on the site seemed to know it existed.

My how time flies when we're having fun.
