My HP Office Jet 500 has gone on strike. It has given me many years of exceptional service but now refuses to print in any comprehensible language. This multifunction machine has performed thousands of tasks including scanning, faxing, printing and copying. In stead of giving into it’s hefty demands I have chosen to offer it retirement, to the closet floor! I certainly need to replace it but am unsure on what to replace it with. Until I decide I have made an impulsive purchase at Office Max of a HP psc 750 printer, scanner and copier. But really honey, it just followed me home! Ah heck that usually works with all the critters I bring home! Everyone in my house has a new printer except for me. When my husband offered to let me use his old Lexmark until I could decide what I wanted I gave him one of those looks. You know the one!
The fact remained that I needed something dependable, something that printed in bright vibrant colors and a scanner. So far the Hp PSC 750 has fit my needs rather nicely.
The one thing I like best about the 750 is that it takes up far less space than comparable machines of this type. The dimensions are H. 10.7 by W. 14.1 by D.17.8 and it weighs 19 pounds. There is little room on my desk as there is. My second favorite feature is the creative copy button on the control panel. The control panel is located next to the scanner lid and has a two-line LCD display and copy controls. The 750 printer is much quieter than my previous multi function machine.
I don’t even need my computer to use it. I am just beginning to learn the wonders of connecting with the USB connection. It is so much faster and easier to install to my computers front USB port. (No parallel port connection is possible). The USB cable does not come with the printer.
My previous Office Jet 500 didn’t have a flat bed scanner and it also only scanned in black and white. I hate asking my husband to scan color images for me all the time. So having my own flat bed has been wonderful. It easily scans books and pictures. Many times I would want to scan very old text or pictures and wouldn’t do so because of the roll in type scanner I had before. Many times I have put documents into that machine and the gremlins would tear it to smithereens.
The scanner bulb life is 20,000 hours or about 5 years with normal usage. There is an adjustable power saver mode that turns the bulb off anywhere from one to two hours when it is not in use.
Scanning, copying and printing text is every bit as clear and sharp as a laser printer. I have though about buying a laser printer many times but the cartridges are just to expensive to justify the expense especially since the new jet printers have exceptionally sharp imaging. It prints at 600 x 600 dpi for black text. It also has a pretty nice scan to web feature.
The 750 even does a fabulous job with 3D pictures. I haven’t seen a printer up until this day that could do 3D justice.
This impressive little multifunction printer print at 2400 x 1200 dpi color pictures, and scanning images at a 9600 dpi enhanced resolution. The pictures are very true to original with the enhanced color layering technology (Hewlett-Packard's PhotoREt III). This enhanced color layering technology precisely places and layers tiny droplets of ink. The images aren’t quite as nice as a dedicated ink jet but the images have very little is little pixelation.
The speed of the printing is pretty decent up to 11 pages per minute in black and 8.5 in color. I’ve certainly seen faster but not to shabby for a multi function machine. The 750 will copy up to 99 copies. The reduce image and enhance image is 25 to 400%.
The black-and-tri-color ink jet cartridges are not too difficult to install. Replacement cartridges are HP Black Print Cartridge #15 (C6615D) and HP Large Color Print Cartridge C6578A. The cartridges can be down right spendy at $55 and the black ink cartridges are $30
The HP 750 provides high-quality output at a decent price of around $250.00, not a bad price considering the quality and combination (scanner, copy, print) functionality. The risk of buying a multi function machine? If one component dies you have a useless machine. But that does bring us to Hip's sensational customer service and warranties. I have never been dissatisfied with Hip's customer care. I have sent in printers and computers and got them back fixed and in record time. One time I sent in my Office Jet 500 some time after I purchased it only to get a brand new machine. The really cool part is they always sent me two new ink cartridges. The warranty is a one-year limited warranty. One more detail I should mention to make a sound buying decision is that you can scan while you print, but you can’t scan and copy or print and copy
The HP PSC 750 supports the following operating systems: Windows 98 and 98 Second edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000 (with Service Pack 1 or higher) and Macintosh OS 8.6 and 9.x. It does not support Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 nor is network connection supported. The printer language is HP PCL Level 3 or PCL3 GUI.
There is a very nice software package, the included software package is a integrated print, scan and copy for seamless using of functions, OCR software that is much more user friendly that the OCR software that came with my office jet 500. There is also scan to Hp web software and Hp Creative Photo Project software.
I haven’t really found a whole lot I don’t like about the Hp 750 except for the price of the cartridges. I really think the outrages prices for cartridges is wrong. I doubt if it cost a 10th of what they charge to produce these cartridges.
