I was in the market for a new Sony HDR-HC5 camcorder and found the best price ($400) for the one I wanted at RainbowTronics. This was by far that best price I found online.
Overall the web site, while cheap looking, was easy to use and I was able to place my order with minimal fuss. They accept most major credit cards and the shipping options seem reasonably priced. The registration process was pain-free and the order status seems to update very quickly. Email notification was also very prompt.
The next day I got the email requested me to call to "verify my credit card information". Having bought online before, I was expecting to be pushed (and pushed hard) to buy additional accessories. What I didn't expect was to be told that the low price on my camera was because it was the "Chinese version". If I wanted the "U.S. version" that would be $899. The web site makes no mention of this differentiation at all. I cancelled my order and the rep hung up immediately. No wonder the price seemed too good to be true.
I'm not sure what is going here. Part of me wonders if the "Chinese version" thing is just something they say to people who won't load up on accessories to get them to cancel the order (as I did). Or if they are just trying to lure folks into ordering with low prices and then try to jack the price up. Either way, this is a retailer that I will not order from again.
