Announcing The Excellent and the Excruciating Write-Off

Jul 03 '04 (Updated Sep 09 '04)

The Bottom Line You need to enter this write off. Because... um... ... ... DO YOU PEOPLE NEED A REASON FOR EVERYTHING?!?!?!?

The Excellent and the Excruciating Write-Off

A WO co-hosted by Slarter and CaptainD.

To run from: Aug. 2nd - 28th

Excruciating
1. intensely painful.
2. very embarrassing, awkward, or tedious.

Have you ever been to a restaurant where the service or food was so awful that you recall the experience with intense pain? Or have you seen a movie so abysmal that you felt embarrassed for the cast and crew? Did reading a book that was supposed to be exciting and interesting turn out to be an onerous task due to awkward prose and tedious plot devices?

If your answer to any of the above is yes, then you’re halfway towards entering The Excellent and the Excruciating Write-Off!

This write off is a two-pronged affair – the details for the other half is covered by Simon (Slarter). The idea is to write two reviews, in the same category, of an excellent service or product and an excruciating one. It can be any category (and you’re by no means restricted to only one), but you must write both an excellent and excruciating review in that category. (NB – ratings should be 5 star or 1 star – we’re not interested in anything that is merely above or below average!)

It’s easy to write a review slating a particular product you don’t like – but you know me, I don’t like to make things too easy for you!! So what you need to write is a review that actually retains objectivity while pointing out the many flaws of the product. Also, extra points will be awarded for words of more than three syllables and creative alliteration. It would be good (though not necessary) if the two products / services reviewed had some kind of link between them – i.e. if it’s in Movies, then maybe two sci-fi movies / dame Director / same lead actor, etc. But as long as the two reviews are in the same category, it’s fine.

Otherwise it’s pretty open. Obviously I’d like everyone to keep their language clean (including Doc) – not too sure what Slarter’s view of that is. The only thing I would say is that Writers’ Corner pieces won’t be allowed – you have to review and actual product.

We’ve given you a fair bit of advance warning on this one since you’ll actually be needing to write two reviews to enter. When you do, either email slater or myself, or leave a comment either here or in Slarter’s WO announcement. We’ll try to keep up with reading / rating / commenting on / linking to all the entries – though hopefully there’ll be such a big response that we’ll have trouble doing this!

Well, that’s all I’ve got to say for now. So get writing, and don’t forget the start date - August 2nd!!

Read the other half of the WO announcement HERE.
