Keaton and (Lloydd too) well I put ahead of Chaplin.
The grossly over-rated Chaplin for me is the Great Dictator (1940). I think the two Three Stooges shorts with Moe as Hitler are funnier and just as political as Great Dictator is. You Nazi Spy filmed in 1939 released in January of 1940 (before Great Dictator) and I'll Never Heil Again released in July of 1941.

Not "dislike" but indifferent to. I'm more a Keaton man than a Chaplin one, though I like "The King in New York" more than most seem to.

Insipid? Wow Stephen. Someone has to dislike I suppose, surprised it is you.
I had no problem with Deep Discount for a couple of years, then a minor one, then a friend had a problem and I thought it was an isolated incident and then I had a much bigger problem and after trying to work with customer service via both e-mail and the phone I realized I needed to find a company that treated their customers better. Most people would have given up trying to solve the problem which I'm sure is what they were hoping.
Very good prices and selection, terrible customer service and I've spoken to many people who have had problems with them so I felt it important to comment on that.
I've even written letters to the company (as well as e-mails) letting people there know about my epinions too and I've not heard a thing from them. That tells me they don't have a high level of concern regarding their customers.

I think "City Lights" is insipid. My experiences with Deep Discount DVD have been good.

And I've also got to warn everyone that Deep Discount DVD might eventually get you and created a mini-nightmare for you if you ever need to a) deal with customer service b) fix an incorrect shipment c) get a refund or exchange.
You can read all about my travails here:
http://www.epinions.com/content_129596362372
There's companies that give people much better customer service and if I have to pay 2 or 3 dollars more per order (and that's all I usually pay) I'll stick with them.

I wouldn't have any guilt about giving you the very helpful review if you had remember to include CITY LIGHTS.
CITY LIGHTS
YOU KNOW....
CITY LIGHTS...
I would feel better but you prefered to put Moulin Rouge in your review rather than....
see above.
Mostly... okay somewhat a decent list.

Thanks for the link (now I know why my old Epinion of McCabe & Mrs. Miller suddenly received several rates). Agreement is always nice, so I'm glad we see eye-to-eye on this one.
Also like some of your other picks, including Scorsese's New York, New York.
Seems to me I read that Scorsese's wife (at the time), Julia Cameron, author of The Artist's Way claimed she wrote much of it. I don't believe she received any credit and her claim of authorship has been disputed.

Bill

It's the only overlap with my general ten best list... and unforgettable, especially to any San Fransican.

Glad to see you remembered to add this romantic masterpiece. So many romance enthusiasts leave it out. I've always seen "Vertigo" as Hitchcock's ode to his lost love, Grace Kelly.

Hooray on your selection of "McCabe and... (Reply to this comment)

...Mrs. Miller," also one of my favorite movies ever, overly stylized or not. Any vehicle that can (a) be shot in shades of mud brown, (b) make Leonard Cohen's music work without havinbg thelistener commit suicide, and (c) make Warren Beatty look like he can act (in more than just "Bonnie & Clyde")just HAS to be a masterpiece of direction.
And Julie Christie....oh, my! Even better than in Zhivago.
Interesting post, Stephen. cheers, nick

I saw "A Man and a Woman" on its original release (that is, long, long ago) and was bored. The uncharismatic leads never get together do they? So they can't break apart.
I barely remembered that Keanu Reeves was in "Dangerous Liaisons", though he was fine in it, but the movie belongs to Glenn Close.

Deep Discount DVD does not have everything. It is my main supplier of new DVDs, including "McCabe and Mrs. Miller"which not only has the right aspect ratio but has an interesting commentary track by Altman. I highly recommend both the DVD and the supplier.
I was at the time and still am a Julie Christie fan and thought she carried "Dr. Zhivago." At the time of its release, Geraldine Chaplin was seen as the weak link, though then and now I think she is just the sort of wife Zhivago would have.
I'm also a Greta Scacchi fan and regret she hasn't had more great roles. She supplies plenty of heat in "Heat and Dust"!
I know that the style (hyper-cutting) of "Moulin Rouge" put off many. I was exhausted before it really got going when I first saw it, but settled into its visual rhythm. I remain particularly impressed that after"Pillow Book," "Trainspotting," and "Velvet Goldime" Ewan McGregor can project such innocence.
Although I don't think the "Casino" or DeNiro in it are as bad as you do, I think it fits the not living happily ever after frame (along with "The Last Temptation of Christ").
Since you usually agree with and laud my every word, I am, of course, sad at your incomplete agreement here. Did the CIA make you do it? Or was it President Cheney who was unwillingly lured into invading Iraq?
