Think twice about buying this..
Quality of the service, is very good. You basicallycan get high speed internet, plus FIOS TV (Direct TV) and on-demand movies. Quality of the signal and reliability of the service is very good.
Prices are about what you'd pay for DirecTV plus internet together -- +/- $5 / month.
Issues --
- the FIOS service requirest running a fiber optic line to your house to replace the copper cable. Installs in this area have ranged from ridiculously easy (my place) to disaters (my neighbor's -- broken water pipe, need to break into the slab etc..)
- You lose the central powered wire phone connection. You get a battery backup supposedly that will run the phone for 72 hours. You are not responsible for maintaining and replacing the battery in that. This is not emphasized in their literature.
- The FIOS TV is DirecTV, a pretty good service. But in my experience you pay about the same amount for the same service. But.. since it's now coming over the phone line you get the phone line taxes on it. That adds about 20-30 % in my case. In all, it costs more than the DirecTV package we had.
- You must RENT a set top box for $5 per month. That's not explained. The basic set top box does not allow you to program it to record programs. To do that, you need to rent a box that costs $13 a month, another $8 per month. To get equivalant service and capability, this is now quite more expensive than DirecTV
- The on-demand movies are prices at about what NetFlix or Blockbuster cost. Savings per movie are maybe $1 per movie, if that. Not a savings.
- You have to sign a 2 YEAR service agreement with a $200-300 early termination penalty for this service.
My experience is .. think twice about doing this and ask about all the prices involved. In our case it's coating about the same as we had before (but without the premium channels we had on DirecTV), and we're locked into a 2 year service contract.
We probably won't renew...
