| Freak369's Full Review: Lego 2D Pumpkin Pack |
There comes a time in every Lego lover's life when they have to admit that there are some sets that are completely unnecessary. The 2D and 3D Pumpkin Packs are shining examples of my previous statement. A flat seven inch by five inch pumpkin shouldn't cost ten dollars; moreover, if they are going to bend people over for such a set, at least package it in a box or something that looks a little better than a plastic bag. Even so, when the Halloween sets were back in stock at the Lego website I foolishly ordered them thinking that I was going to get something special. Even after I read the description at the website and saw the finished size of it, I still blindly thought that I was getting a good deal and would end up with something that looked great. Suffice it to say, if you think this review trashed the 2D Pumpkin Pack, the one for the 3D will probably be a lot worse. There's nothing wrong with the sets but the packaging sucks, they aren't sold in retail stores and the price is too far over the top.
Lego Halloween 2D Pumpkin Pack
The basic idea behind this set isn't about making something cute for Halloween, it's about making money. That's the only reason I can come up with to justify this set. Why do I say that? The instructions for building the set are available at the Lego website so there's no need to buy the set if you have the bricks required for the task. Second, charging ten dollars for something like this is highway robbery but the people at Lego know that people like me will buy pretty much anything with the Lego name on it. Oh sure, we'll still complain about it but we will still buy it. This isn't something that you need to buy if you have the elements on hand; the problem with that is getting orange bricks in a set is a rarity so unless you have millions of bricks at your disposal, chances are you will have to order the set to build this in the traditional orange color.
What do you get with this set? Elements to build a flat pumpkin; flat meaning that it doesn't have the depth or size of the 3D version. It looks cute and doesn't take long to build but it still bites me that I had to pay ten dollars for it. A majority of the bricks are orange but there are some black ones that are used for accents and of course the green one that is used for the stem. While I will admit that there are some rare shapes in the orange assortment you can get the same ones from brick brokers and vendors if you search around. If you do happen to have a lot of spare orange bricks or want to make a pumpkin in a different color, you can get the step by step instructions from the Lego website.
The finished design is undeniably a pumpkin; it has two eyes, a nose and a rather scary toothy grin. How you position the teeth is you to you and if you have more of the same black pieces in your inventory you can add them to give him a slightly fuller look. Assembling this is nothing more than a matter of stacking the pieces so it isn't hard at all; Lego suggests this for kids ages six and older because of the potential of a choking hazard. If this were less expensive it would be the perfect thing to add to a trick-or-treat bag for your favorite little Lego lover that comes knocking on October 31st but at ten bucks a pop, you are looking at a huge investment if you have more than a few kids that come calling.
So the packaging is bare bones [pardon the pun], it's over priced and the end result is nice looking but nothing spectacular. What else do you need to know about this before you buy it? Well, you wont have any luck finding this in a retail store. If you want it you are going to have to go to the Lego World Shop to get it and that means having to pay a shipping and handling fee to get it. Don't drag your feet if you want this for a Halloween decoration though, you need to place your order soon if you want it to arrive before October 31st.
The Bottom Line
I am sure that my fellow Lego lovers will take notice of this when they see it on the table but I dont think many of them are going to rush over to the website and order one when I tell them how much it cost. When Playmobil re-released some of their Halloween Pals and Special figures they at least packaged them with a plastic pumpkin and in a nice box. I felt more than a little ripped off with this set but no where near as much as when I saw the 3D Pumpkin Pack. I guess I misread the description on that one because when I got it, it was something completely different than what I expected. If you are a hard core Lego lover that has to try and get their hands on everything that Lego releases then by all means order this. For everyone else, I think it's a safe bet that you can eek out your time on earth without owning this or anything else in the Lego Halloween line up.
