| Freak369's Full Review: Lego 3D Pumpkin Pack |
Far be it for me to ruin the fun and merriment of Halloween for anyone, let alone Lego lovers and fanatics. After my review of the 2D Pumpkin Pack I caught some flack from people at the Lego boards; they said I was being too hard on the company and that the price was justified because it is a seasonal item. Some stood behind me and supported me but because the Lego loyalty runs deep, many didn't voice their opinion on the board. Personally, I think the concept of both the 2D and 3D Pumpkin Pack is a great idea but the implementation is poor and the price is insane. Even so, I ordered a set of each and chalked it up to having an addiction to plastic bits and Halloween related things. The overall design of the pumpkin is nice; you have to stop and take into consideration that there is only so much that you can do with Lego pieces. You cant get a completely smooth surface to it no matter how hard you try.
Lego 3D Pumpkin Pack
Essentially this set is nothing more than the 2D Pumpkin Pack in duplicate form. So why buy it? Well, because you can make a 3D pumpkin from the pieces, hence the name of the set. So why buy it if you know that it is overpriced, the end result is average and you can make it from your own pieces thanks to the instructions that are available at the Lego.com website? Because I don't have that many orange bricks to build the 2D version let alone the 3D version. Sure, I could go to a site like Baylit and order them there or even troll the Lego site and buy the bulk assortment of bricks but that isn't the same as buying the original set. Even though this is poorly packaged in a plastic bag [no box], getting the complete set is a lot easier than having to dig through the bulk assortment.
So the pumpkin. When I first saw this at the site I assumed that you would be able to take the top off it and use it for something, even if you could only toss in a couple of miniature candy bars, it would look cute on a table. Well, that isnt the case. It is easy to build if you follow the instructions that come with it but on the same token it is easy to put a piece in the wrong spot. You are essentially building something that is hollow inside but not something that has a removable top to it. This means that there are a lot of wasted pieces on the inside of the pumpkin but they are there for stability. If you try to skimp on them, you will end up with your pumpkin falling apart. Unlike the 2D version, there isnt a lot of immediate detail to it; from a distance it looks like a pumpkin so you have to be up close to it to see the mouth, nose and eyes. The finished pumpkin stands about five inches tall and five inches wide. With some customization you can make it so that there is a removable top to it but you will need a lot of flat faced tiles to do that.
Another downfall of the set is the product number. This is K3731, the 2D version is 3731. See where I am going with this? If you aren't careful when you are ordering this online you could end up with the wrong set. And make no mistake about it, buying it online is the only way to get your Lego loving hands on it. Why? It isnt something that retail stores will carry or sell because of the way that it is packaged. Something in a plastic bag, no matter how colorful or decorated, is still a plastic bag. For the price they are charging for this, it could come in a box so you dont feel completely ripped off. I know, I know, I could have skipped ordering this set but I am a Lego fanatic and when you are in that situation, you do spend money on things that are unnecessary.
If you are thinking about buying the pieces from Lego you can find the individual pieces in the Lego World Shop Pick A Brick section of the site. The 2 x 3 bricks cost fourteen cents each and the 2 x 4 bricks cost sixteen cents. That means you will still have to get the 2 x 2, 2 x 8 and various sloped pieces to build your pumpkin. While it is nice to be able to order individual pieces from the website, there are some pieces that they don't sell. On top of that, there is a base shipment fee of $4.95 so if you think you are going to save money trying to assemble the pieces individually from the Lego website; you are in for a rude awakening.
The Bottom Line
While I grumble and gripe about the price of the set and the fact that you can build it without having to purchase the actual set from Lego, it was something that I had to have. The instructions to build this are available at the Lego website so if you want to take a stab at building one from your spare bricks, you can find them in the seasonal section. There is a list of required pieces but you can substitute the colors if you wish. Unless you have a ton of orange bricks you are going to be stuck for pieces; so know that before you enter into the project. I'd recommend this to the hard core Lego lovers only; if you are a fan of Halloween themed things then this might be nice to have around but at almost eighteen dollars, it is a pretty big investment for a seasonal item.
