Pros: Characters, storyline
Cons: something missing that would have pulled me into the story
The Bottom Line: Heather Graham's, The Seance, was worth the money I spent on it.

| cmaw63's Full Review: Heather Graham - The Seance |
I have an interest in the supernatural. Not that I necessarily believe, but for some reason I would like to. When I saw the title of this book, The Seance, I decided to give it a try. I had never heard of the author, Heather Graham, but I'm always looking to add new authors to my favorite list. Did she manage to make it onto the list?
The Seance tells the story of Christina Hardy and her ability to see the dead. After her granda died and "visited" her, a young Christina was told to never allow the dead "in". Letting in the good would open doors for the bad. More specifically her gran is worried about the mass murderer, the Interstate Killer, that was laid to rest on the same day, in the same cemetery as Granda.
Years later, Christina inherits her grandparents house. Moving in, she finds someone else is living there. Beau Kidd, the man many thought to be the Interstate Killer, is haunting Christina. Neither can figure out the connection that has brought them together, knowing it is more than Beau being buried the same time as her granda. The real Interstate Killer is alive and leaving a trail of bodies. But, what can Christina, an advertising jingle writer, do to stop him?
Will a seance provide the answers in time to save lives?
An Interesting Ghost
I like a book that gives a background to the main character right from the start. Meeting Christina as a child in the first chapter allowed me to understand the adult Christina better. Heather Graham did a nice job with the transition. She kept enough things the same, while adding new, that the flow of the story was never interrupted with me having to flip back to the beginning to figure something out. I, especially, liked the way she tied in Beau Kidd right from the start.
This is a ghost I would like to have. He puts coffee on, tidies up, and keeps Christina's dog amused. It was interesting that Beau Kidd was written as a solid ghost. He was able to be touched, move things, and talk. I knew he was a ghost, yet he was a real character in the story.
Christina is a multi-dimensional character. Her many traits blended together to make her a good focal point for the story. She was allowed to have humor, fear, confusion, intelligence, and love. Unlike many stories I've read, when she first meets a ghost she does what I would expect...she faints.
Most of the secondary characters were the same from beginning to end. It let me get to know them, almost, as well as I did Christina. The only new introductions were towards the last two-thirds of the book, but were given a history with Christina that allowed them to fit in nicely to the story. Of course there was the love interest, Jed Braden. I have yet to find a book, unless it was non-fiction, that didn't include some degree of romance. At least Christina and Jed knew each other for years before they became "involved".
So, why isn't this a 5 star book? I don't know. There was something about the story that just didn't feel right. I spent too much time trying to figure out what it was and that stopped me from totally enjoying the book. I am the type of reader that immerses herself in a story and becomes a part of it. I never felt a part of this book, yet I enjoyed it. The Seance was worth the $7.99 I spent on it, but it is a book I won't mind lending out.
Heather Graham may not have made my top authors list, but she does have me looking for another one of her books. She may make the list yet.
