| jbrd's Full Review: I Know Who Killed Me |
Okay, we all know Lindsay Lohan's career is in trouble. I mean, I know I do not have to go on and on with all that she has been through, much thanks to Lohan herself, not to mention her mother. Anyway, I Know Who Killed Me has become the worst movie of Lohan's career. It flopped really bad at the theaters, only making around 7 million at the box office. It may sound decent, but to other films of Lohan's, it just doesn't equal. It has been hated over and over, bashed more than once and it has been claimed one of the worst movies ever made! I've seen my share of really bad movies, so is this movie really THAT bad?
Aubrey Fleming, a perfect student with a small town life, she had everything going for her until the day she is kidnapped and tortured by a serial killer. After days of search, she is found alive, but with her right arm and right leg missing. However, that isn't all that she has lost--herself. A "split personality" bad-girl named Dakota Moss who repeatedly protests she doesn't look like Aubrey at all and that she isn't Aubrey at all. Delusional? Perhaps, but what happens when no one believes you, with a killer still on the loose, and you don't remember who the killer looks like. Aubrey, er.. Dakota must unlock the mystery surrounding the death of her own self.
So is the film that bad as they say? Not quite. I must say, and I really can not stress this enough, I Know Who Killed Me is a movie that requires your full attention. You should not get up, scratch your butt, go the bathroom, eat, etc. because this film goes in so many directions that if you do leave, you will become lost in a maze of aggravation. Amazingly, the film does not have a pacing issue because the viewer will more than likely want to know the truth. If you do stay and give the film your complete attention, you'll find the film's story piecing itself together in a way that you will say, "Oh yeah, now I see." The story is quite interesting; a girl who gets kidnapped at a high school football game becomes tortured and left for dead on the side of the road. Days later, she is found and now she believes she is another girl. Not to mention the killer is still out there. It's entertaining, provocative, and quite seat-squirming.
The reasons why this film has been hated is because of the script. Written by Jeffrey Hammond, he wrote the script so loose, again, if you distract yourself from the movie, you'll be lost and it doesn't help that the film switches from present to past. Hammond has a good story hidden within I Know Who Killed Me and with someone who has patience like me(I actually had patience today), you'll find this film quite entertaining. That is, until the climax reaches and you are fed with a complicated yet simple way of ending the movie. She isn't dreaming so you can get that out of your head! I mean, if it wasn't for the ending, the film could have been better. I Know Who Killed Me is a thriller, but I didn't see any scares in sight. They were forced, predictable and not very effective at all.
Second reason is Lindsay Lohan herself. She plays two characters, Aubrey and Dakota. Again, this will confuse you because they look exactly alike, but if you keep up with the film, you'll definitely know the difference between the two. I actually thought Lohan was quite good. It isn't her best performance nor is it her best movie to star in but she did want to stray away from her childish ways. Playing a sleazy stripper and having sex with a strange guy will certainly do, even though her present life definitely changes it anyway. For the rest of the cast, you really don't pay attention to them because anyone who does go see this movie, they will keep their eyes on Lohan because they want to see if her career is definitely over. Well, I was one of the ones who did pay attention and the cast was quite effective.
Visually, Chris Sivertson did a really good job on directing this film. He is completely obsessed with the colors red and blue and at the end, it is revealed why the two colors appear so often. He literally spills the colors red and blue all over the screen, either showcasing Dakota stripping to articles of clothing. He makes the film stylish, unique, and visually a treat for the eyes.
The hype around this film are three things. One is Lohan's first sex scene in a movie. I don't know if they intended it to be funny, but it is! Second, Lohan strips in the film. When has stripping become PG-13? Lohan takes no clothes off, only underwear and a bra and not to mention she strips quite pathetic, but yet it's quite intriguing in a weird way. I still think she should take lessons from Britney Spears. The third and last is the violence and gore. Supposedly, Hostel and SAW fans were to stay away from this film. I'll have to somewhat agree to that. The violence looks realistic, gut-wrenching and completely sickening to the stomach. Yet, it isn't as violent nor graphic as the two films, but the violence in IKWM is still graphic.
Sleazy, cheaply-made, but yet I Know Who Killed Me is still a unique, entertaining and quite an interesting thriller. The critics may be right about the film being quite loose on the script and the ending is extremely disappointing, the film does have values of an entertaining flick...to those who stick to the film and not distract themselves from it. But of course, the film is out on DVD now and you can always pause and rewind.
