| dandj's Full Review: I Know Who Killed Me |
Aubrey Fleming has been abducted by a vicious serial killer, known for torturing his victims over a matter of weeks before leaving them to die. The viewers are made privy to exactly what Aubrey suffers through while the killer has possession of her. Somehow, unlike her predecessors, she lives, albeit not as a whole person. Only she insists she is Dakota Fleming, a stripper and the daughter of a crack head.
Dakota has specific memories of the time Aubrey was missing, but none of them make sense. While the police try to force her to tell who "cut" her and the parents try to force her to remember her life as Aubrey, she is just trying to prove she's not lying and get to the truth of what's happened to her. If she's right, Aubrey is still in the hands of the killer, and every minute counts.
The premise of I Know Who Killed Me is a good one. It was just very poorly executed all the way around. Chris Sivertson's direction gave it the look of a cheap horror flick. This was only intensified by the part of "Fat Teena" as played by Bonnie Aarons (Princess Diaries I & II). I really would have loved to see this movie done by M. Night Shyamalan, or someone of his ilk. Under that type of direction, I think it would have been vastly more promising.
Lindsay Lohan apparently wanted to show her grown up side after doing such movies as Freaky Friday and Mean Girls. Playing the big-breasted, potty-mouthed sex kitten was not the right choice to make if she wanted to be taken seriously. She's far more believable in her previous roles as the talkative teen drama queen. Perhaps she should have studied the work of Shannon Elizabeth who was able to flawlessly switch from a role such as the one she played in American Pie to that which she had in Thir13een Ghosts.
And, oh my gosh, her erotic dance at the strip club. There's another area she should have studied up on. Done mostly in slow motion (to hide her lack of rhythm and movement), it was just sad. I was, quite frankly, embarrassed for her. Then they go and put an extended version in the special features. Why?
I was left with a lot of "why's" after watching this movie and really wished for more in the special features. The only thing they included were the aforementioned dance scene, an alternate opening and ending (both of which were useless), some decidedly unfunny bloopers, and previews. Where's the commentary to explain what the significance to all of the blue and red was, why was the killer's basement decorated with hanging wooden legs, and why all the latex gloves had to be blue like the killer's
from the school biology lab to the police department. Rarely do I worry about a movie's commentary, but the rare time I am hoping for it, there is none. I was even looking forward to the possibility of something being said about the fun detail I noticed of the 4 colored ink pen that first came out in the 80's.
Other actors to note are Neal McDonough (Timeline) who played Aubrey's father and Julia Ormond (Legends of the Fall, First Knight) as Aubrey's mother. She had a great scene that had me laughing out loud as she scrubbed an already pristinely white sink while trying to distract herself from the sound of her daughter having sex upstairs. Lastly, Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon (TV's Eyes and NYPD Blue) gave a commendable performance in what was just a very bad film.
Leave this one on the shelf at the video store unless torturing yourself is on your short list of things to do.
