Good knives and the kitchen go hand in hand. Buying a set of knives from the store undoubtedly comes with a storage solution such as a knife block built in, while buying open stock knives requires the user to search for their own system. In my case I began purchasing select Global knives for my cutlery needs long ago. The open stock solution, while attractive in that you get only what you want/need, leaves a need for some sort of storage solution. Enter the 24 slot Cooks knife block!
What is it?
The 24 slot Cooks knife block is a knife storage solution available from JC Penny's Cook's collection. The knife block is built from sturdy and safe rubberwood and comes in an attractive black finish which will complement the kitchen with stainless steel or black appliances. The front of the block is stamped with the Cooks symbol, a sign of mid- to upper- level quality. The block itself is oriented at slightly less than 45 degrees from horizontal, placing the handles of the knives in easy access for the user. The block has two tiers for storing the knives, some in the horizontal plane with others (smaller knives) in the vertical orientation. The lower tier contains 8 vertical slots about an inch or so in length for steak knives. My wife and I store the older steak knives from our original Chicago Cutlery set in these slots. The upper (larger) tier contains slots for storing larger knives such as cooks knives, paring knives and the like. We store our open stock purchases including the Global Hollow Edge Santoku knife, the Global GS-3 Small Cook's knife and of course the GS-7 4" Paring Knife in this tier. Also present is an oversized square slot for the knife sharpener. The other slots in our 24-slot block vary in size from three inches or so in length down to just over an inch or so. These additional slots are taken up by various knives from the older Chicago cutlery set, sure to be changed out with Global knives as the need/desire hits.
How does it work?
The 24-slot black block is a great storage solution for your upscale knives, as it is constructed of soft Rubberwood with slots that run all the way through the wood. This is important as any collected water or food bits will fall through to the countertop as opposed to collecting in the bottom of the slots and either rotting the wood or rotting themselves. Washing down the knife block is simple with a warm, wet washcloth, and it has withstood the trials of our kitchen now for a couple of years. The block has four rubber feet on the bottom to keep it slightly above the countertop, and they move around easily while staying in place, never coming off in a couple of years of use and two moves.
Overall
I would recommend the Cooks 24 slot black block for those of you who have taken a fancy to purchasing your own open stock knives as I have. The design is great for use and the looks are such that they will complement any kitchen. The only real downside I could find after purchasing the block is that none of the slots are quite large enough for a cleaver, which I want to buy in the future for my own meat carving needs. I would give this 4 stars total as this is an economical, well-designed storage block for knives that will go well in any kitchen.
