| SHAPIRO2's Full Review: Toshiba Satellite 2805 |
I just recently bought this laptop to replace my Compaq Presario 1700T (P3-850,512MB, CDRW/DVD, etc.). After Compaq decided to send it back inoperable & then not really wanting to help me on the phone, I simply destroyed it out of pure rage! Anyway, this Toshiba is much better. It has 16MB of video memory, so it's much more like a desktop computer in video performance! Inside it's all Intel with a Pentium III 850 w/ 512MB RAM (100Mhz FSB), combo 8x CDRW/DVD drive, LAN, 3 USB, and Firewire (IEEE 1394) for digital video. It also has a big BRIGHT 14.1" display that can easily adjusted with the onscreen brightness controls (same for the volume, play/pause, etc). It also has CD buttons on the outside with indicator lights visible with the lid closed. You can also play a CD w/o powering up the laptop.
As far as the rigidity of this computer, it's as solid as it gets. You'll first notice how it's not built like a Sony or Gateway. It's very solid and makes no crackle type sounds when you lift it. I've even held it on the corner with one hand and it felt as rigid as a 2x4. The AccuPoint pointing stick is a little tough to operate compared to a touchpad. It does, however, operate like one... in that you can tap it to click or tap and hold your finger down to click & drag. I just use a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical as a solution!
Overall, if you want a tough, fast, and reliable laptop, get this one. It's got everything you need and nothing you don't (a floppy for example -- my standard configuration is the cdrw/dvd drive in the option bay and the battery in the other).
