After the Ever After
Feb 14 '05
The Bottom Line So many love stories end with a supposed "happily ever after". I'm choosing to view that as the beginning, not as an end unto itself.
After the Ever After
(for Christine, my soon-to-be-bride, which scares and excites me all at once)
Come take a look with me
Come part the veil and turn the page
And get a peek into your wildest of dreams
This is what you've always wanted
And I'm standing here beside you and I'm haunted
By these promises and cheers, kisses and tears
Just one word describes it - "Finally"
And some would say to drink in deep
'Cause this will be the best day of all our years
And as the music cues and credits roll, I'm thinking
It's not the end
'Cause our story doesn't have to climax here
But what if the morning light
Doesn't quite portray you right
When you're not wearing white?
And what if this suit and tie
Are not always my style
And you find them buried in a pile?
And what if ever after goes
And turns our poetry to prose?
Even then, would you know that I still love you?
Of course I do.
Just take a breath with me
Just squeeze my hand and dive in deep
And what began as two will soon emerge as three
This is what you've always wanted
The day to which your clock has always counted
A fragile moment half past you and half past me
Just one word describes it - "Family"
And some will note the tendency
Of parenthood to turn the sane to the absurd
But through this childlike wonder
We will learn the world anew
And we will speak a language of wide eyes and nonsense words
But what if those midnight tears
Turn from music to our ears
Into never-ending headaches?
And what if silly childhood mistakes
Keep us frantic and awake
To deliberate 'til daybreak?
And what if ever after shows
Itself to be more thorns than rose?
Even then, would you know that I still love you?
Of course I do.
This is for the days when I don't remember
This is so I recall why I gave you this ring
This is for the times when you burn with passion
This is for the moments you're not feeling anything
This is for the summers when we own the whole wide world
This is for the months when ends don't meet so well
This is for the years spent in our home sweet home
This is for the weeks when it's a prison cell
And there's no one I'd rather be bound to through it all
I say this now so you'll never have to wonder
What God weaves together for ever after and beyond
Let foolish hearts like ours never tear asunder
Never tear asunder
Now I won't expect disaster
I plan to celebrate our ever after
But even when we'd rather not, I'll stick around
A love beyond just the flavor of the day
That's what I'll pray for us
That we'll find joy whenever happy lets us down
Whatever ever after brings, I'll stay
And each day recall the vow I made to you
"I do."
