This DVD contains three episodes of the PBS Kids show Cyberchase. Cyberchase is an animated show that teaches different math concepts as the main characters implement them in real situations. The end live action segments further show real life application of math concepts by showing a person using the episodes learned math concept. The show’s plots typically involve the three human main characters (Matt, Jackie, and Inez) and Digit (a robotic bird) on missions to stop the evil Hacker’s plans to take over Cyberspace. This is an entertaining and educational show for kids around ages 8 to 12.

The first episode on this DVD is called “Totally Rad.” This episode is set in a skateboarder neighborhood in cyberspace. In the episode Hacker takes over the area and bans skating. The kids challenge Hacker to a skate off to restore the proper king and break the ban on skating. In the episode they learn about how different rectangles can have the same perimeter, but different amounts of area and the smaller the area the less room to complete tricks.

The second episode is called “The Borg of the Ring.” This episode is also set in the skateboarder area of cyberspace. This episode teaches about circles as the kids go on a mission to take a powerful ring that lets him get whatever he wants away from Hacker.

The third episode is called “Fortress of Attitude.” In this episode the kids must stop a giant statue of Hacker from emitting his voice throughout Cyberspace before it convinces all of Cyberspace to surrender to him. In the episode they use different things to measure distance in order to avoid booby traps.

This DVD has a few special features including a tutorial on how to draw Digit, which actually describes and shows in a way even inexperienced artists can follow and draw a decent looking Digit. It also has some bloopers from the For Real segment that comes at the end of each episode.

The DVD also has some computer games on it if you put it in a DVD-ROM. Best of all they actually made versions that work on a Mac. The first game is called Eye of Rom. In this game you follow the directions on color paths to get the four pieces of the Eye of Rom. The second game is called Jigsaw Puzzle Size Up. This is not a normal jigsaw puzzle, as some of the pieces have to be resized to fit. This can be a frustrating game, but it does teach you to learn to recognize what happens when you double or half the object. The final game is called Melvin’s Make a Match. In this game you have to match up the bottles of potion that have the same fraction. Some fractions are shown as images and others are shown as number fractions. All of these games are easy for kids to play and can be a fun way to learn math concepts or reinforce concepts already learned.
