| mike.holmes's Full Review: Sex and the City |
I had a wild experience tonight. I went to the midnight sneak preview of "Sex In The City." Years ago, my daughter had gotten me hooked on the HBO show that featured humor, sex, beautiful women and some drama. The "wild" part tonight occurred because out of an audience of approximately 300 people I was the only person over 40 (I'm 61) and I was the only male who was by myself. My wife is out of town but even had she been here, I doubt that she would have gone at such a late hour.
Before I delve into the movie itself, it was interesting to me that the huge majority of the audience were young women in their teens and early 20's when, in fact, the film concerns women in their 40's. But whatever the age of the crowd, almost everybody in the theater seemed to enjoy the movie. I loved it.
THE PLOT
While it is not mandatory to have been a fan of the television series to enjoy this movie, it certainly helped to "know" the characters. The four main characters are:
Carrie Bradshaw, a New York writer of a sex column and "sex advice" books (portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker)
Samantha Jones, a bombshell blonde who at 49 still can get enough sex each day (Kim Catrell)
Charlotte York, a surprisingly naive stay at home mom (Kristin Davis)
Miranda Hobbes, a workaholic attorney who is more married to her job than to her husband (Cynthia Nixon)
The main storyline of the film concerns the surprise decision by Carrie and her long time "boyfriend", Mr. Big (Chris Noth), to get married. They have broken up at least two times but are living happily together when they decide to get hitched.
I don't really want to say much more for fear of spoiling the plot except to say that the bulk of the film concerns the huge buildup for the wedding, some problems that result and a rather strange but hilarious "honeymoon" in Mexico.
WHY I LOVED THIS MOVIE
Very few television shows move to the big screen with any degree of success. This film is a major exception to that rule. Why? Because almost everybody intimately connected with the HBO series is involved in the movie. Beyond the obvious fact that all of the characters from the series reprise their roles here, the director and screenwriter for the series performed those same tasks for the film. His name is Michael Patrick King and the man is a tremendous director and writer. The "team" concept made this film have a continuity with the series.
Add the fact that all of the actors, and especially the four leading women, have an incredible chemistry on screen, and you have the formula for a great movie.
While the majority of the cast were from the series, there were two major additions: Candace Bergen who portrays Carrie's boss, Enid Frick, and Jennifer Hudson who portrays Carrie's personal assistant Louise from St. Louis. Bergen does a good job but her screen time is limited. Ms. Hudson continues to show that she can "steal" a scene just as she did in "Dreamgirls." I don't mean to imply that she's overly aggressive. It's just that she is a natural actress.
While the film is certainly a female actress dominated movie, the men in the film also do an excellent job. David Eigenberg as Stever Brady (Miranda's husband), Evan Handler as Harry Goldenblatt (Charlotte's husband) and Jason Lewis as "Smith" Jerrod, Samantha's hunky Hollywood actor boyfriend all do an excellent job of acting.
For a comedy, the film is non-stop action whether it's great dialogue (or in Carrie's case, a running mental commentary), a fashion show or just pure comedic situations, the movie works.
The bottom line for any comedy for me is not only that I think it's funny but the reaction of the audience around me. In this film, the crowd laughed throughout. True to the series, however, there were several serious sub-plots and an excellent overall moral to the story.
Aaron Zigman's music also added strength to the film as did the cinematography of John Thomas.
I thoroughly recommend this movie.
