I have been traveling for over 20 years and my recent stay at Sunapee Harbor Cottages in NH was the worst lodging experience I have had. The cottages are advertised as the only waterfront cottages on Lake Sunapee. However, they are not on the water, guests can barely see the water, and after crossing a moderately busy street and a public park to reach the water, guests will learn that they can not swim in the water in the harbor.
The cottages are also advertised as family friendly, but nothing could be farther from the truth. The proprietor spent our entire vacation berating the children in our group for normal child-like activity and the cottages come with a thick rule-book that contains little family-friendly encouragement. I have traveled with this same group for 9 years and not once has any owner of the various lodging establishments corrected our children for any type of behavior.
At the end of our stay the proprietor refused to do a walk-through of all of the cabins and then created a long list of minor items that she used to attempt to withhold our security deposit.
The erratic behavior of the proprietor has been documented at travel sites like travelpost.com, however, we only read those reviews after our stay, so part of this post is to help warn others away. Staying at this lodging invites the type of harassment and financial dispute that we are all trying to avoid when on vacation, and the disagreeable nature of the proprietor at Sunapee Harbor Cottages will ensure your vacation is ruined.
