Tablets are great, they really speed up your work and make some applications much more effective or productive. If you haven't tried on, you should find a friend who has one and give it a try. If you are getting one, then you should get a Wacom tablet. I have used Wacom tablets for the past 4 years, I say tablets because I am now on my second tablet. (My first tablet is happily being used by someone else right now... I would continue to use it, but it's an ADB based device.) I've never had a problem with either and no of nobody who has.
If you use any sort of graphical software (Painter, Photoshop, Illustrator, CAD, etc.), a tablet is a must. It gives a very intuitive interface and makes these programs much more useful. The other thing that these tablets are excellent at is surfing the web. The software that comes with the tablet is very flexible, giving you more then adequate control over all of its functions.
I currently work in an office where we have Wacom tablets on all the computers here. At the beginning of the summer, my boss was complaining that his hand was hurting from using his mouse. He tried five different mice and 3 trackballs, and none seemed to help. I let him borrow my tablet, within a week, he said the pain had decreased and within three weeks, he never complained. He got a tablet and hasn't complained since... additionally, he got tablets for anyone else who wanted one.
I would highly recommend the Graphire product to anyone who is looking to get a tablet. It is well built and very functional. If you are a going to use this tablet for graphics design or need to have extremely precise positioning of the pointer, then you might want to consider Wacom's Intuos line, but at a higher cost.
Overall, I can see no reason not to have one of these devices attached to your computer.
