| AliventiAsylum's Full Review: Verizon Mobile Phone Service in New York |
It was almost two years ago that my husband and I caved to buying cellular phones. He is a bus driver in New York City, and the way I had been reaching him was to beep him and then he'd call me back using a calling card on a pay phone. That was running us around $50 a month.
For $60 a month (at the time) we got a deal with Verizon Wireless that gave us each a phone with our own separate numbers. It's called the Family Plan and we each are allowed 200 minutes of calls on our phone, plus 200 minutes between the two phones. Since that time, the cost of our plan has actually gone down by $15 per month.
Our plan included phones that didn't look too good, but we received credit towards the phones we wanted to purchase. Verizon salespeople seemed very flexible and wanted to give us what we wanted at the best price.
There are a wide variety of options and plans available with Verizon. Need more airtime? You can get it - Verizon can custom tailor a plan to fit your needs. They offer such features as 3-way calling, call forwarding, call waiting, and voicemail. All of these are offered with varying plans that can be customized to suit your needs.
The only problems we have encountered is in the City my husband had found a lot of dead zones in between the high buildings. There was also some trouble when we were in Upstate New York with acquiring a signal. The service will usually not work at all in the subway. To be fair, we have had a lot of trouble with the phones themselves, so some of this might be because of them and not the service. When we purchase new phones, we will see if there is a difference.
The real test for us came on September 11th. Since on any given day, my husband works a wide variety of bus routes, as soon as I heard the news I began trying to get through to him. At first, the phone just rang as if he had it on and wasn't answering (this is what he does when he is driving and then he calls me back later on). But then, for a while, I could not get through at all. The infamous all circuits are busy was one of the worst sounds I'd ever heard in my life.
A little more than an hour into the events of September 11th, I dialed his cell phone for what had to be the hundredth time, and got through! Three more times that day we talked to each other. While other services were knocked out of service in the Metropolitan New York area, Verizon was still working just fine.
Though we may need new phones, we will definitely stay with the service plans we have with Verizon.
