Automotive Technology Update: 2005 COBALT SS
Sep 06 '05
The Bottom Line The good outweighs the not so good and ugly. The dealer has been very responsive and the car is a joy to drive!
This is a follow-up to my earlier new car owner report on the 2005 Chevrolet COBALT SS
.
PRO:Still a blast to drive
CON:Fit and Finish (but fixable!)
THE GOOD:
After 90 days, my 2005 COBALT SS is still more fun on four wheels than Ive experienced in 50 years of driving. The acceleration is a kick in the butt, the braking dislodges my dentures, and the cornering is incredible.
The creature comforts leg room, head room, A/C, lumbar support, sound system, etc. are world class. My major regret is that a full time job limits my ability to put on more miles.
THE NOT SO GOOD:
The car was delivered with a metallic rattle in the exhaust system under hard acceleration. It became worse louder and nearly continuous. The Chevy garage diagnosed it as a faulty heat shield installation. After a week of waiting, replacement parts were delivered and the problem fixed under warranty. I was without the car for 2 days.
The gas mileage varies from 30+ mpg on the Interstate to less than 10 mpg in traffic. Avg: 20-25, regardless of grade.
THE UGLY:
The paint job suffers from orange peel. After a day of driving in heavy rain, the security system went haywire. The maximum windshield wiper speed (about 45 beats per minute) cant cope with a Texas gully-washer.
I plan to make a warranty claim about the paint job and see if the dealer will buff out the rough spots.
Watch this space for further developments!
