I always wonder what the ‘glory days’ of Epinions were like. I came along at the tail end of 2003, so it’s safe to say I missed the time were every hit to your review was worth $0.30. A lot of the big names of the past have departed, because the site has gotten ‘dull’. From what I understand, there were many write offs to keep morale up, along with most members going with the flow & not taking things so gosh darn seriously. I could be wrong about this, but I gather that’s how it worked back then.
Nowadays, we’ve got members writing a large amount of reviews, in rapid succession, but where is the love? Anyone who writes for this site must being doing it for fun, not money right? I mean, come on, the Epinions cash cow doesn’t produce a lot of milk, and unless someone’s running a scheme I don’t know about, most folk are likely to agree with me.
So, if we are doing this for fun, why, oh why are people folding their tents and casting aside their cyberspace pen? Because the reviews have taken over, and the personality is wilting faster then a petunia in a furnace. On Epinions, what do most folks do when they get tired of reviewing products? They stop writing altogether.
Epinions is almost like a planet. Each category is a country, the Leads are the presidents/dictators and the advisors are the government that runs each country/category. Some members elect to engage in a bitter war of words, while others like to create multiple accounts to trust their ‘mother account’, and some like to steal other people writing and present it as their own.
So I guess what I’ve been trying to say is, we all need something non-threatening and fun to keep us going through the thick and thin. So, I propose a write off that will bring back some love to the site. A ‘mutual back patting session’ is what we need. A Hall Of Fame. A shout out to the members that have made your time at Epinions worthwhile.
