| thatsmytake's Full Review: John Gray - Mars and Venus on a Date |
This is a brilliant book. Amazingly easy to read, and just plain brilliant and insightful. It should be considered mandatory reading for anyone who is dating or even thinking about dating... it's that good.
I am a 45 year old grad student... working on my MFT (Masters in marriage and family therapy) so I read a LOT of material about relationships. I read scholarly, peer-reviewed research articles. I read academic texts. I read about theories, I read about... well, you get the picture... you name it, I read it. I've also read a fair amount of "pop" psychology too.
This book is definitely "pop" psychology... I know that, and that's why I'm almost embarassed to recommend it. But I MUST, because it's that good. It's just that good. I recommend you read it several times, so that the content really sinks in... and then re-read it once a year, because as we all know, old habits are hard to break and keeping the book's messages fresh in your mind will help you actually adopt the new habits the book recommends.
The book will explain to you how the opposite sex thinks, feels, and behaves. It will even tell you why they behave that way. And it will tell you how to respond to your date or potential mate in a way that will bring out the very best in him or her, and get YOU to your relationship goals.
The dating advice the book gives, in my opinion, is flawless. I marvel at how John Gray figured all this out. You will marvel too! It rings so true. The book makes such perfect sense that you will find yourself laughing at times and thinking "He's SO right!" At other times you will be scolding yourself for having done SO many things "wrong" for so long!
Great reading for men, and ESSENTIAL reading for women. John Gray has the guts to make astute observations and claims about the nature of men and women, without caring whether or not his ideas are "politically correct." I love that! And believe me, his ideas are NOT politically correct...
If you are a feminist, this book may make you a little crazy. You may feel like strangling John Gray, in fact. But ask yourself, do you want to win the "most faithful Gloria Steinem devotee award," or do you want Mr. Fabulous to ask you out on a second date? I thought so. Just trust me, read the book. Get a copy for yourself and one for your sister, daughter, or best friend.
