Subject: Sock Advice for warm weather?
Hello,
I read some of your reviews on epinions.com and wondered if you could help me pick out a great sock. I currently do surveying work in the hills of south east Kentucky, where it can get pretty warm low 90 degrees and humid. In these conditions I sometimes spent 8 hours a day walking in 11" waterproof Red Wing boots, due to the possibility of often walking though streams for long lengths of times. I am wondering if you can give me some advice on a soak or a sock and liner that would be great on wicking away sweat, and keeping my feet COOL, because my feet tend to sweat all the time. In the winter time I wear really heavy wool socks, but for the summer time in this heat I don't really know what to wear, can you help... I would like a sock that goes a little on my leg, perhaps just a little lower then the top of my 11" boots.
Intro
I know how bad it can be with having socks that do not wick away sweat with being in heat of up to 107 degrees F prior to adding in the humidity factor to wear it can feel like 125 degrees F and the last thing after hot day (when I worked as a land surveyor the Summer of 2006) was to have hot stinky feet. To combat this nasty potential situation I would wear my Thorlos and a Wigwam Gobi Liners.
The Answer
Hi John Doe,
Glad to hear from you and thank you for asking.
Buying socks now days can be difficult with their being so many socks and so few people who use more than the standard sock. My best educated guess backed by measuring would be your safer choice of going with crew length so your boot will be higher than the sock by a small amount.
The liner for this kind of weather can be found here
Wigwam Gobi Plus Liner Socks F2154
but maybe a longer one if you like because may be a little short.
And the best regular sock should be either
Acorn 200 Weight Fleece Versa Socks -- Free to Wear All Year Long
or
Thorlo Wool Hiker Socks -- Excellent Blister Free Socks.
Both of the regular socks are pretty expensive between $10-15;however, this is an investment in the comfort of your feet. And the liner sock is about $5-$7, sometimes less.
I would recommend trying out each combination (Acorn with Gobi Liner and Thorlo with Gobi Liner) before going and buying a bunch of either regular socks before deciding to get an entire set.
And to help protect your investment in your feet purchase a laundry bag to wash them in and wash with fabric softner to help prevent hydrolysis. Hydrolysis is simply the fabric rotting. When comes to drying never hang dry unless you have no power because of hydrolysis and I recommend drying on low heat for all of these socks but do not leave inside dryer to long. And for the regular socks it is best to turn them inside out prior to drying to fluff the cushioning.
