About my grading scale

Aug 01 '07

The Bottom Line is Metacritical.

There have been some queries about the format of my grading scale. For example:

"Rating: A- (88/100)"

"But! But! But!" the reader sputters, "Doesn't 88 mean... B+?"

If you are in elementary school, yes. But I go by the Metacritic grade conversion scale (http://www.metacritic.com/about/scoring.shtml#scoring), which is thus:

A+ (100)
A (95)
A- (91)
B+ (83)
B (75)
B- (67)
C+ (58)
C (50)
C- (42)
D+ (33)
D (25)
D- (16)
F+ (8)
F (0)

Why is this, you ask? The answer is quite simple: if someone scores a CD a "2 out of 4," they are stating that the record is "okay" -- or, they're giving it a "C." 2 divided by 4 equals 50 percent. Hence,

2/4 = C
2/4 = 50%
C = 50%

Make sense? I hope so.

Note: The exception is that Metacritic lists an "A" as "100."

Note 2: An 88/100 is also why an "A-" grade can be rounded down to "four stars" on the epinions scale. This is why the company should allow half-stars.
