Pros: Fun season mode, improved gameplay, myriad of teams
Cons: No franchise mode, horrible rewards, getting used to new power system
The Bottom Line: This is for anyone looking for a soccer for the Playstation 2. It's not really for people not interested in soccer.

| marcosmark9's Full Review: FIFA Soccer 2002 for PlayStation 2 |
First, let me say that this review is only for the Playstation 2 version of this game. I have no idea what the PC version is like.
The first thing you notice about this game is the enormous variety of teams available. It has all the best national teams. Unfortunately, the Dutch team (Holland), which surprisingly failed to qualify for the World Cup, has mostly numbers instead of player names. This isn't the only team that has this also. Most less popular teams also use numbers for names. On a side note, I think its kind of funny when a player is named something like No. 15 when right to the left of that it says his number is 14. For what I can remember as the first time, this game includes teams like Ecuador and Pakistan, teams historically left out of soccer games. This game also contains club teams from all of the best leagues in the world (Italy, Spain, England, Germany, US [joke]) and some of the more MLS quality leagues like Israel, Switzerland, and Japan.
The second thing you will notice is how the gameplay has changed since last years version. Well, you won't notice that if you didn't play FIFA 2001. One difference is that the field seems much bigger. Another, more important difference, is the new passing and shooting system. You have to hold the direction you want kick and then hold the pass, shoot, or lob button for a certain amount of time. If you want to pass to someone far away, you would hold X until the ball is kicked. However, if you want to just chip the ball over a defender's head, you would just tap the square button. It takes a while to get used to but afterwards you'll think, "This new system is great, why didn't they come up with it before?" I think it makes the game more realistic.
The season mode is the same as previous versions. You buy and sell players and try to win as many games and cups as you can. A red card or two yellow cards for the player in separate matches, and that player is ineligible to play in the next match. I wish there was also a franchise mode like in the Madden games where players retire and improve.
Beating tournaments will earn players "rewards." In one place there is a list of I think 9 tournaments and a box to the left of each. Beating a tournament will check off the appropriate box and will give you a reward. For the first few tournaments you open up another tournament. Guess what else you win. No, not the cool classic mode from World Cup 98, it's a photo of a player! Now guess what you can do with this photo. You're still thinking, I know. Well, you can't do anything with this photo. Even though I knew what the rewards were, I was compelled to beat each tournament so I could get every box checked off.
The music in this game is pretty good. It has some tie in or something with Ministry of Sound. I put the music on during the matches to drown out the announcers and I don't get bored of it. It's all techno or dance or electronic or whatever you like to refer to it as.
