| nick1326's Full Review: Boston Acoustics 4" Two-Way RC41 |
I've been and continue to be a faithful Boston guy, and don't plan on changing my mind anytime soon. Read my other reviews on some great Boston products - in the meantime enjoy this review of the RC41's - a fantastically engineered set of components designed to fit in the tighest spaces and still give you great response and that rockin front stage which Boston is renowned for...
I feel like a sort of cheater writing this review actually - since it was quite a while back that I bought and used my FIRST set of RC41's. Most of my cars are outfitted with 3 way boston seperates -the now legendary 6.53's - however my fiancee needed speakers, to be driven by a moderately powered 4 x 20 old phoenix gold amp that I gave her. The phoenix is a great little amp and supplies ample power and CLEAN power when bridged. Having used the boston rallys myself many moons ago- impressed with their great performance a while back, I opted for them again, since I had limited space and she didn't need to spend the extra on the pro series....
Once again I'm astounded at the response of these little mid's stuck under the dash of a corolla- the upper midrange cut right through and even mide-dash level mounted, gave an ample above-the-dash stage and belted clear guitars and great female and high-male vocals right through the crossover point...speaking of crossovers...
Before I get into the greatness of the boston's tweets, the crossovers need to acknowledged. Boston has never skimped on putting quality components into their electronics- the construction and components in the rally x-overs is no exception. A moderately steep curve, the crossover manages to create a pretty seamless gap from mid to tweet - only the RTA told the complete story, however my ears weren't able to hear any peaks or valleys in the crossover region...
The x frequency also doesn't put too much stress on the tweets, as do other brands - and the roll-off of 85Hz is sharp and clean and won't make the little mids bounce, despite their small size. Rubber surrounds are also evidence of high-quality construction and should be demonstrative that Boston pays the extra attentionto quality even in the mid-line equipment. Many other brands stick foam surrounds in to cut costs - they also wear and crumble in no time. THe rally series truly is built to take a beating and details like rubber surrounds are the proof.
One feature of the Rally series tat truly makes them worth the bucks is the tweeter design. Unlike the titanum tweets of the competition series (which I use) the Rally tweets are soft-tweets - and therefore aren't as harsh. Although I love my comp tweets, many people actually PREFER the rally tweeters because of their smooth linearity. I've seen many guys in sound competitions actually use the rally's OVER the comps especially for the listening segments (not RTA so much)
The price of the Rallys combined with a knock-out response (even for such a small package) make the rally's a great choice for a consumer looking for quality sound along with a great price AND they don't require much modification (if any) to fit in most cars. Today, where dash size is decreasing and room and flexibility in todays cars is rapidly disappearing, the Rally 4"s make a great choice for someone looking to upgrade to seperates. Go listen to a pair and decide for yourself, but do yourself a favor and listen to the competitions to really see the difference in tweeter response. Lastly, remember that these are 4" drivers, and if you want to really round out yuor full front stage and make the bass-directionality nearly indistinguishable (to keep stage up front) you will want to add a mid-bass driver!
