| EWI770's Full Review: Medal of Honor: Allied Assault For Windows |
In the past many first person shooters(FPS) games have been made revolving around the idea of world war battlefields but this truly is by far the best I have seen yet. Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault brings war games to a whole new level with unpresidented detail involving some very realistic mission based of actual events of world war 2.
Graphics: 7.0 out of 10
The models included in Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault such as guns, enemies, allied troops are well made for the most part. Unfortunately the models and graphics are not particularly impressive compared to some of the recent shooter games you may have seen out there. For example...Max Payne...Return To Castle Wolfenstein and others all have slightly superior graphics to this game.
Probably the best graphics in the entire game occur during the starting 'opening' selection screen in which you get to select whether you want to start a new game...continue an old mission...what difficulty etc.
The 3d engine which was chosen for Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault rather surprised me considering there have been many later FPS games since Quake 3. Some of which are claimed to be easier to create games in. If you are looking for examples of other games which have been modeled using the Quake 3 engine, you could try looking at Star Trek Voyager: Elite Forces
I suppose the most impressive aspect of this category would have to be the fact we have been fortunate to have been given so many different 'titlesets' aka 'ground types'. Ex. You can be marching through a snow covered german base...Storming Omaha Beach...Or just deep in the heart of a jungle.
The cutscenes in Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault are nothing to special. In most cases they really only occur at the start of missions which happens about every 1 or 2 hours of gameplay consisting of basically a series of pictures that change while a narrator speaks about your mission.
Gameplay: 7.5 out of 10
Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault was throughly enjoying throughout the entire time I played this game. For the most part if you are ever stuck you can do just what the boot camp says...Follow your compass and you will generally reach your objective within a few minutes.
About 50% of the game is 'solo' work and the other half consists of you and your platoon or in some cases a single partner fighting against nazis. One of the promising parts of this game would have to be the fact that your 'allies' would follow you around and sometimes engage the enemies on their own taking the initiative.
The AI was fairly intelligently made for your 'allies' except in some cases I wish they would be a little more careful. A fine example of this would be the 4th or 5th mission in which for SOME REASON, which I shall not name for not wanting to ruin the storyline, your partner starts with a relatively low portion of his normal life. This of course means the smallest of blows(ouch I got a booboo) would often result in him dieing...resulting in mission failure :(
One MAJOR WARNING I have to give you is this game is NOT for the inexperienced FPS gamers. I have played and passed a fair bit of FPSs in my day such as Deus Ex, Quake 1&2, Golden Eye etc, and I found this game on easy mode on even the first mission got fairly difficult. As such unless you have played at least 1 or 2 fps games prior to this one I would have to warn you. This game can be brutal.
For the minority of the time I spent was in multiplayer. Unfortunately I can not really say too much about this games multiplayer other than its Quake 3 with new weapons, new models, same multiplayer gameplay. I probably would have spent substantially more time fiddling around with the enjoyable multiplayer if I had not already played Quake 3's multiplayer for what seems like many hours on end.
Music: 8.0 out of 10
The music included in Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault was composed specifically for this game and was composed by the same artist whom made the music for all of the previous games. A lot of it is classical music but very thematic and fitting to that the particular missions/battlefields.
Sound: 8.0 out of 10
The sound effects in Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault are as good if not better than a lot of first person shooters I have found lately. The gunshots, explosions, machines and even buzzing coming from light all sounds life like.
This game also includes a fair bit of speech whether its by your fellow squad members/partners or whether its in the briefings prior to missions. The majority of the voices are fairly realistic sounding as one might expect although surprisingly the characters actually say relevant things. For example during the first mission if you listen carefully one of your fellow squad members tells you "Man that Machine Gun, (YOUR CHARACTER'S NAME HERE(Which I have forgotten))".
Storyline: 8.5 out of 10
The storyline for Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault basically is what one might expect from a world war 2 game. You are a highly skilled military officer whom has been assigned to a 'special' platoon designed specifically for doing behind the enemy lines missions.
In many aspects though your character is very much like a spy in that he can speak german...wear their clothes...steals security papers to get past unsuspecting guards and destroy secret documents and new war-time developments. In the process killing countless enemy troops and scientists of course :).
Some of the missions link together in that some of your partners will carry on to the next mission with you but other than that basically each mission is relatively 'seperate' and not very connected to eachother. Although many of the missions you will notice are based of real world war 2 battles such as Omaha Beach in which the American Army unloaded hundreds of troops(you included!). You may remember this scene from the very start of Saving Private Ryan and unfortunately yes its just as hard as it looks in the movie :(
That concludes my review of Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault.
Allied Assault is an extremely realistic and difficult world war 2 first person shooter game which is definitely worth testing out. I would be willing to pay approximately $40 CA Dollars ($27 US Dollars)
