| gt-master's Full Review: Teraoptix TERAPIN Stand-Alone CD Video Recorder CD... |
At $199 @ "Sams Club" the drawbacks are not as noticeable . A very good unit to fill the gap between my beta's [250to310res] , VCD [240] , and recordable dvd's [400to500+res] . I hate VHS [200to240res] and any format that comes along to replace my VHS junk is welcome . The "VCD" format will playback on most new DVD players . But I did have to replace my 2 year old Onkyo DVD player with a newer unit to playback my recordings . Also one of the problem with the long 80min./700mb CD-R's , is that some of them will not playback on the TERAPIN TX-0002 , but will play perfectly on my DAEWOO DVD player . ???? The tech. line was no help with this problem . All they told me was the manufacturer is now advising that they will not work with the unit , you are not to use them in the unit . They told me that the unit was designed to only work with the 74min/650mb "For Consumer" CD-R's & CD-RW's { And Not To Use Any Other Type !!!!! } .Their explanation was at the time when the unit was designed and built the 74min./650mb CD's were all that was availible . So the unit's laser is not calibrated for the longer CD's,tighter width between the storage bands on the CD's . So the recorder has troulble reading the narrower storage band widths . No 80min./700mb , No data type CD-R's or CD-RW's !!!And they do have problems , but some will work . You might have to load a CD 4 or 5 times ( insert then remove ) , before the unit is able to figure out the CD's . But most of them will work . The stop and start delay is longer with these 80min./700mb CD's. And even longer on the data CD's . But the picture is just as good with the cheap data CD's . Also keep in mind that the 74min./650mb CD's are already becoming hard to find & the possibility that in a few years they might be unavalible ???? Who knows . In closing ,this is a good unit for educated video enthusiast , but if you are not at least familiar with CD-R's & CD-RW's ( what they are and how they work ) or not willing to invest the time to learn!!!! You should stick to video tape!!!! But if you are willing to learn , this is a good unit if you understand it . {It does take a lot of time , for someone like me with a video & electrical engineering degree , you must invest about 20 hours of research } .
If you have no video education or practicle experience with recordable CD's you might have trouble understanding how to operate the unit . The instructions are clearly not written for the average consumer to use it without prior knowledge of the workings of a VCD or CD recorder , so consider this if you are thinking of buying one .
Good Luck !!!!!!!!!!!
