The Bottom Line: If you need a printer for special printing needs, like decals and metallic printing, this is the printer to buy. But for everyday printing buy an inkjet.

bathory's Full Review: Alps MD 1000 Dye Sublimation Printer
I purchased the Alps MD-1000 printer several years ago. It is used to print water slide decals for custom fishing rods. While it is a little slow, the results are well worth the wait. The colors are perfect and it prints in metallic colors as well. There is no smearing,as with inkjet printers. For top quality printing the Alps is great but stick with an inkjet for your everyday printing needs.
The Alps MD-1000 uses a dry transfer printing process. This produces print that never smears even when subjected to water. It also will print glossy photos on plain paper. It uses a clear covering to coat the printed areas and the results are the same as using the best photo paper. The one thing to remember is to use laser paper and not coated inkjet paper.
