| kitty_7's Full Review: Dell Dimension 4300 Series |
In December 2001 I got a new computer system. which included:
Monitor: 15 inch flat screen
Speakers: Harman/kardon subwoofer and speakers,
computer type: pentium 4 cpu (win xp home ed., 1.6 Ghz processor speed, 80 gigabyte hard drive, 256 mb ram)
Drives: a dvd/cd-rom bay, a cd-rw bay, 3.5 floppy drive,
modem: conexant v.90 modem*,
printer: Lexmark X73 all in one printer (also goes by X83) allows you to fax copy, print scan from the printer by a touch of a button or from the computer
software: along with the standard microsoft software and 25 extra peices of software from Lexmark.
Ease of use in regards to setup
All of the cords are color coded and it's easy to set up even if you never had a computer before. All software and hardware is pre-loaded by Dell so you just need to plug up the system and go!
Problems out of the box
*However, the conexant speaker phone V.90 modem is another issue. It did not work. There is a modem helper software installed on the computer that froze when accessing the modem. Tech support sent a technician out with a new modem, but that did not work either. Upon going to the Dell customer/chat site, I found that many other Dell owners had problems with this modem. My suggestion is to buy a new modem, like I did.
Possible weaknesses
I have used Windows 3.1, 95 and 98 SE. Win XP took me a day to get use to. The programs are easy to use and find. With an abundance of usb ports (5 in the back of the cpu, 1 in the front under a hidden panel, a 2 under the keyboard) you can plug and play till your hearts desire with ease.
Upgradability
The cpu has a "open" form. meaning that you can easily open the cpu by puching a button on top and opening up the side of the cpu. this allows you to easily and quickly upgrade you modem, memory or anything.
dvd: The dvd is in it's own bay, so you can upgrade that to a dvd-rw drive.
cd-rw: the cd-rw is in it's own bay, so you can get a faster model if you need to.
hardrive/memory: With 80 gigbytes of space (about 70 after getting it from Dell) you have room to add programs and large movies. There are extra expansion slots for more memory or other hardware. ram can be upgraded.
other: Before you install a new progran or device, you cn set a restore point with the system restore program that is included with the computer, that way you can go back in "time" if the program crashes the computer or you get a malicious virus.
Ease of use by people
I don't consider myself a true computer expert, but I have used extensively all version of windows and write computer programs so I am confortable with this system. My grandmother, however has little computer knowledge but finds it pretty easy to use. I think young children 10+ will find this computer easy to use (hint: win xp allows you to make seperate log in screens so you can make an account limited in access to protect against accidental deletion of files.) One can be easily intimdated by the new look of win xp, but is is easier to use and more stable than win 98.
