Being a poor, starving grad student with Scottish ancestry, I swore early on in my school experience that I would not spend a ton of hard-earned money on my textbooks. I soon found a textbook search service (see my BigWords.com review) and lo and behold, almost every book I searched for was at its lowest price at Booksamillion.com.
I have now ordered textbooks and other mechandise from Booksamillion.com for five semesters with very few problems. Generally, the price of the book is right and the shipping reasonable. (Currently, Booksamillion is offering free shipping for orders totalling $49 or more.) Most of my books have been delivered when promised; in cases where the book was out of stock or delayed, I received an email telling me the status of my order and offering me options such as shipping the available items now, waiting for the back-ordered item to come in, or cancelling all or part of my order. They are also quick to reply to emails to their support desk. I also receive emails when my order is shipped, complete with tracking information and link to the UPS website. You can opt out of their "special offers" emails, but I enjoy reading about what new books are available and what's on sale at their site.
The site is easy to navigate, and I rarely have to change my search to get the results for which I'm looking. The first check-out was a bit complicated as I had to enter a coupon code, my new Booksamillion membership card number, and my shipping address/billing address details. However, subsequent check-outs have been very easy with most of my details already completed in the applicable boxes. When I renewed my membership my new membership number was already entered, so they may have made that portion more convenient for new members also.
One caveat: to get the best prices, you must purchase a membership for $5 a year. Given that I buy a lot of expensive books and that I save much more than the $5 cost, I don't find this to be a problem. If you are only ordering a few books and do not plan to use them much in the future, the $5 membership might not be for you.
I have come to rely on Booksamillion for textbooks and other books, including popular novels. Hey, why pay more than you have to?
