| bxk209's Full Review: Iomega Hipzip 31311 40 MB MP3 Player |
The Intro:
Before I got the Iomega Hipzip Digital Audio Player 40MB, I had been looking for a good, portable MP3 player for a long time, without success. A CD-MP3 player I bought was just terrible, it skipped on any light jostle, so I returned it. At the time, Smartmedia, and CompactFlash MP3 players were out of the question for the simple fact that memory cards were very expensive. So, naturally, the Hipzip caught my attention very easily, a non-skipping, removable disk MP3 player, this is a great choice, right? Wrong! While the idea of cheap, removable and small disks is quite a good one, Iomega should have spent a little more time perfecting their design. The Hipzip lasted me a little more than 6 months, then it just quit...Here's some of my opinions about this player
The Essentials:
-The sound quality of the player itself was better than I expected. But then, I didn't use the stock headphones that came with it, I got a pair of Koss Earplugs, which made the sound richer.
-The menus/operation of the player is quite easy, menus are easily accessible and understandable. One could ask for a few more options, and a more stable firmware (it liked to crash once in a while), but overall, not a bad OS.
The Other Stuff:
-The design of the player itself is ergonomic, fits in the palm of an average hand, and all the buttons are easily accessible/sturdy.
-The plastic flap over the disk drive is just too flimsy. Too often I thought I was going to break the thing while taking a disk out.
-The disk drive mechanism makes a little bit of whirring noise every 30 seconds or so, but not enough to be disturbing. The drive itself seems a little shaky, not very sturdy
-The Body glove for the player is just mediocre, it hides the headphone jack, it just doesn't fit right.
My woes:
-6 months after I got this player, it quit working. Both the disks that came with it became unrecognizable, and even a reset didn't fix the problem.
-Tech support was just horrible at first, it took forever to get in touch with them, and they seemed to try to answer my problem with the stupidest solutions ("Did you reset the player? Did you take the disk out/put it back in?")
-I finally got them to ship me a replacement, which, unfortunately, did not work at all
-I returned the replacement, and being tired of all the run-around, sort of forgot about the whole problem
-Now, I have a perfectly fine paperweight on my hands, but no matter, after all the searching, I decided to get an MP3/CD deck for my car :)
The Result:
-Iomega has lost my trust, I don't believe in their products anymore, much less in their tech support. I recommend anyone who's thinking about getting this player----look elsewhere, you'll be sure to find something better these days! Have fun, and don't get burned like I did!
