While Travelocity does an excellent job providing timely information, easy online transactions, and attempting to keep you updated, their No Changes policy on "Good Buy Fares" is simply unacceptable.
You can't transfer it to someone else. You can't reschedule the flight. You can't turn it in for a partial refund. You can't even get a discount on your next fare. Mind you, this is not the AIRLINE policy. It is Travelocity's policy.
Not even if you try to make changes more than 30 days before the original flight schedule, and certainly not at the last minute.
Now, I have no problem with airlines needing to cover their costs and manage their revenue stream. I don't mind paying a cancellation penalty or even having to resell the ticket on my own. Nope. Travelocity is going to resell this seat or pay some minimal fee to the airline if it can't... (and the airline has in all likelihood oversold the flight anyhow)
So no doubt the processing that isn't handled automatically cost them something. I don't mind covering those costs. But NOT to the tune of $624. This is just gouging the customer, plain and simple.
As a business practice, and as a customer care policy, it will backfire.
From the consumer point of view, just don't buy one of those super-cheap flights unless you ABSOLUTELY KNOW you won't get sick, your mother won't have a heart attack, the workshop won't get canceled, outbreaks of Ebola whatever aren't declared in your destination of choice, or one of the myriad other "eventualities" that prompt changes in travel plans.
