| bg031's Full Review: Sony Ericsson T200 GSM Cellular Phone |
I've had a Motorola StarTac 7797 for two years. Last week, when I decided to upgrade my phone, I thought I'll go for something that allows me to surf the Net and do a 2-way SMS messaging, which the StarTac was not able to do. I went to my service provider (Rogers AT&T), and they told me that I can't upgrade under my old plan, which was a corporate one, and that I have to renew my contract for another year, and for a price that I didn't like. So, bye bye to that. Loyalty gone to waste for me. Off I went in search of another provider, and ended up with FIDO, for a good monthly plan with no contract:) I chose the Sony Ericsson T200, because aside from my criteria above, I wanted GSM phone that I can use even when I travel. There was also a special promotion that allowed me to get the phone for only $100Cdn on the spot, with no mail-in rebate or any of that crap.
I love the phone:) It's small enough to fit into my tiniest purse, and the reception is good. Despite complaints of friends about GSM not being good enough here yet in Toronto, I haven't had any problems yet. I haven't missed any calls, and the incoming and outgoing calls are both clear. I have no problem hearing, and being heard. One friend did complain that the background noise was really loud, but I think that has to do more with where I was at the time. And it' really nice to be able to use the same phone, whether you're in Europe or Africa.
The ring tone is loud enough to be heard even when I was walking in the middle of loud traffic and the phone was at the bottom of my back pack. The menu is easy enough to understand and get to without having to read the manual, and the background light is pretty good as well.
I turn off my background light a lot to save battery power, and the screen is still pretty readable even during the night with minimal outside light.
I really like the fact that I can change my wallpaper, and type my own message if I want, which I was not able to do with my old phone. I also like the 4 games (although basic), and the other misc stuff such as calculator, alarm, and calendar. Really nice features to have, for such a small and reasonably-priced phone.
One thing I don't like about the T200 too much is the fact that I had to get a cover for the phone because the keys are too sensitive for my taste. The numeric pad is great coz it's lifted, so I know for sure that I dialed the numbers, but it's cumbersome as well. One time, I accidentally sat on it, and it dialed a number without my knowledge. The person on the other end actually heard a whole conversation, before I realized this happened. It's also too small for text messaging (which I do a lot), but it's probably something I'll complain about with other phones as well, so....:)Another thing, the battery life is a lot shorter than what was on the manual. Like mentioned above, I had to turn off my automatic background light to save battery time. I had about the same duration with my StarTac,which was disappointing for a new phone. However, it still provides an OK amount of time.
In general, I'm really happy with choosing the T200. I recommend this phone highly.
