| ptorrone's Full Review: Segway Human Transporter |
Unlike many review and reviewers, I actually am -using- the Segway HT for my daily commute 7 miles per day and it has exceeded all expectations. So here is a real world review.
I'll start out by saying the Segway HT isn't for everyone. If you live more than 10 miles from most of your destinations, it's not ideal. Also, if you like bicycles and like to get around that way, you might want to stick to that.
On the "softer" side of the benefits, the Segway HT emits zero emissions; it costs roughly $0.10 to fully charge the unit via a standard electrical outlet. We all know there are too many cars in the usa, most trips are usually 1-5 miles on average, for those of us who can use the Segway HT it makes sense. Again, it's not for everyone, so if it doesn't fit your needs that's okay, for some it's right on.
Walking
So one thing that I've heard from a few people is "What you're not going to walk anywhere?" Here's the deal- my commute by walking would be 62 minutes, it's less than 17 on the segway ht. I could jog or run there, but that would be about 30-40 minutes and since I meet with clients, coming is sweaty, late and run down isn't really something that makes sense. I jog 2 miles every morning now as and that is what i do for exercise. Most great inventions kill the inefficient tasks, and give you time back, almost like a time machine. Banging my shirt against a rock in the stream would be great exercise, but the washing machine is really better. I'm a runner; the Segway HT won't replace that, in fact now i'll have more time to exercise as opposed to sitting in traffic (I've lost 5lbs since getting a Segway HT).
Legality
Washington (where I live) is one of the 32 states that have specific legislation that states that the Segway HT can go anywhere a pedestrian can go. The footprint is about the same, which is of course amazing in itself. I happen to live in washington. Most other states are fine with the Segway HT, but do check with local government to get the official scoop.
The machine

You can tell that this is quality instrument. It's rock solid in every way. It's well designed and I have had zero problems.
Safety
I've never felt safer on any moving vehicle, since the Segway is an extention of walking you have the same level of control as if you are on foot, lean forward - go forward, lean back go back.
Since I've been using the HT I've never had a fall, slip, or anything, the machine has so far been great.
Pricing
It's $5,000 and for many that might be out of range, for me-- I've saved money since I got rid of a car, so it's really based on your travel needs more than anything else.
