The Bottom Line A few ideas from someone who doesn't "do" Valentine's Day (hey, I am still observant).
Valentine's Day mistakes . . . I can name a few. This is why I don't "celebrate" Valentine's Day anymore. My boyfriend and I (oh, yes, the trendy [and probably annoying] little cynics that we are) don't see the point in it. We e-mail each other cheesy love notes all the time. He has sent me flowers for no reason in the middle of December. Who needs chocolate in a heart-shaped box to express their deepest and truest emotions anyway? Feh.
But I bet a lot of you Epinoners out there dig February 14th, and I can appreciate the reasons why you would. Valentine's Day just hasn't been the same for me since my tastebuds fully formed, and I realized how disgusting those chalky conversation hearts really were. I'm bitter.
Anyway, here are a few bona fide Valentine's Day mistakes:
1. Buying a Valentine's Day gift to make up for a year of neglect.
This is one of the main reasons I don't like V-D (don't snicker, you know I mean Valentine's Day). It seems that some significant others feel they can abuse or ignore their loved ones for 364 days of the year, and a stuffed animal and a dozen long-stemmed roses will make up for it. I don't think so! Show appreciation every day; don't take loved ones for granted. V-D might bring up feelings of resentment if it's used as a panacea for bad relationships.
2. Don't buy "sexy" or presumptuous V-D gifts if it's a non-established relationship.
If you recently met your sweetie and have had a few dates, but you still don't have a solid relationship, I think nothing would be more awkward than giving him/her (or receiving from him/her, for that matter) suggestive lingerie or weird (even if they're novelty) sex-related gifts. Save Spencer's merchandise for when you know the definite status of things--don't make people feel pressured into intimacy by giving glow-in-the-dark whatever for your first foray into the world of V-D gift-giving.
3. Don't forget to send your mom a card.
Moms are great, and Mother's Day is not enough. Don't forget about Mom on this joyous yet commercialized lovefest called Valentine's Day!
Well, there you have it. A few tips from a someone who doesn't "do" Valentine's Day.
Have a Happy Valentine's Day, all you lovebirds. And don't forget that Whitman's Samplers will be half-price tomorrow! (Hey, maybe V-D isn't so bad after all.)
