| tommy_lop's Full Review: Sony 8MB Memory Card PS2 |
I remember the day when consoles used to come standard with everything you need to play, two controllers, both types of hook ups for regular cable tv and the ones with Audio Video plugs, and even a game. Now days your lucky if you get a controller, and now you need memory cards to save your data. While I can't accuse Sony of ripping of their customers by not having these come with the consoles, mainly because it's true for all consoles and company's not to include one.
Anyway's when I bought my Playstation 2 I bought this when I bought Gundam Journey to Jaburo. It cost me 25 dollars to get this memory card, while this is even more then the Sony brand name memory card for the PS1 it's worth the money.
PS1 cards could only had 15 blocks of data. In most games this is one save block per save game. This get's expensive if your a real gamer, and when ever you want to save your favorite scene from a FF game or something like that you could literally hear Sony sucking money from your bank account. This led me to use cheap memory cards like the interact memory card.
Well for $25 you can get a ps2 memory card with 8 megabytes of save data on it. To make it even better Sony threw away the block system. Now each game takes up a different portion of save space, measured in the tradition units of KB. Since most games take up about 84 KB of data, and a megabyte is around 1000 KB, you do the math you could probably save up 100 games on this. This means you can save multiple files of FFX without filling guilty.
How to look at memory card data.
Turn on your ps2 with no disc in it and select browser, and then select the PS2 memory card. Each icon is a saved game. On the corner of the screen it tells you how much the saved game data is taking. By hitting on X on the controller you can look at some of the game data, like when it was last saved, useful if your ever wondering which games you really don't play anymore. It also has a copy and deletes commands like the PS1 system had.
What about PS1 games?
You can play PS1 games on the PS2, but you will have to use a PS1 memory card in order to save the game data. And vice versa for PS2 games can't be saved on PS1 memory cards. I am guessing because the PS2 memory card is set up in such a different way that the two systems probably couldnt handle each other. Any way's to check a PS1 memory card with the PS2 you do the same thing that you did to check the PS2 memory card, just select PS1 memory card on the system browser. Unlike the PS1 memory card screen in which you could see empty and fill blocks, the PS2 just has game data floating there, but the last time I saw there still teaching kids how to count in elementary school.
Reliability.
I would like to say that the Sony PS2 memory card has never failed on me but that's not the case, it has deleted one of my save games before. I am however very fortunate that it decided to fail on Marvel VS Capcom 2 which made me a little bit miffed on starting over on that game. However it was not the conniption fit I would have thrown if it was my FF game data. However it was one save data out of several, which I have, so it's wasnt a terrible lose.
Recomendation
Yes I recommend this product if your getting a PS2 in less of course you can sit through a 20 hour game without getting up or shutting the console off.
