Background
One of the joys of having children is that you can indulge in some childhood play sessions with them, engendering a closer bond with your children, and in some cases having some genuine fun, all for yourself. Such is the case with the XBOX game console. Having recently added it to the arsenal of game systems we have acquired over the years, the times have indeed proven good to console gaming.
One of the pet peeves I have had with these systems is that the wired controllers always restricted your movement to the length of the wire connected to it, causing your back and neck to stiffen, and inevitably wearing the carpet in front of the television. NO MORE! Enter the Eclipse Wireless Controller for XBOX from Pelican Accessories.
Just What Is this Wireless technology Like Lou?
The Eclipse, though not the only wireless controller on the market, is a good choice for a number of reasons. Fifty (50) foot-range capability, make it a cinch to fit capably in most home and gaming environments. Sitting in a chair across the room, you are not restricted to pointing the Eclipse at the console. Natural hand positions are the norm here. I have yet to see any interference, even if someone walks between you and the console. Connected to your XBOX console, is the receiver included with the Eclipse. It is constructed of similar materials as the XBOX along with like vented trim and looks very much like it belongs right next to it. By simply connecting the 2 ft lead to one the consoles front controller ports then switching the controller on, you are ready to go!
There are 8 different channels that the Eclipse can operate from in the event that you have conflicting radio signals from cordless phones etc. The receiver and controller have a 2-band selector, with corresponding 4-channel selector on the controller as well as the receiver. To operate, all settings should co-ordinate, not to state the obvious. On the small, unobtrusive receiver, you will see a link LED confirming all settings are correct and game readiness. There is also a small signal strength led to indicate signal integrity. You have the capability of connecting 4 Eclipse receivers to the XBOX controller ports, in which case, 4 different channel settings would be necessary on the receiver and controller.
Two (2) AA batteries, located in a battery bay, up front on the controller, power the Eclipse controller. Battery life is quite good and all claims from Pelican of a 100-hour battery cycle have proven accurate. Obviously, rechargeable would be the more economical choice. A nice battery saving feature is Sleep Mode, which it kicks into when not in use for an extended period, only to be reactivated by hitting any button, very nice! Dual rumble motors and switch controls make for realistic action!
Physical Considerations
The Eclipse Wireless Controller, looks and feel very much like the proprietary controllers that come with the console, with a couple of exceptions. The white & Black controller buttons are located on the right bottom and are easily accessed for resets and other functions dictated by the game being played. They are also mimicked on the front of the controller with plunger controls, once again easily accessed with your index finger.
The Analog stick is located on the left & right sides like the Proprietary controller and the D Pad is located on the left side of the controller, once again like the original. The actions buttons X,Y,B,A are all located in the same spots as the XBOX controller. An indicator led located top right confirms battery life and power supply readiness. A Back function located between your thumbs on the controller is conveniently placed for quick access. On the sides of the Eclipse controllers are soft rubber pads that help steady the controller and channel air to what may become sweaty palms.
Physically, you would be hard pressed to complain about ergonomics, button placement, size or weight. The Eclipse Wireless Controller From Pelican delivers as close to original equipment ergonomics as can be expected without breaking patent laws.
Okay. Where Are The Warts On This Thing Lou?
I surprisingly, have no warts to report on the Pelican Eclipse Wireless Controller For XBOX! This is an exceptional piece of electronics. Using this Eclipse is no different than the Proprietary controller. Aside from improved placement of a few controls, all articulation, response and action are very much on par with anything from XBOX. There is no hint what so ever of controller lag, or sticking. Feel and quality is very much like anything from XBOX!
I liked this unit so much, I went out and purchased another so my daughter's friends can all relax, save their eyes backs and necks to really enjoy the gaming experience with an exceptional gaming system.

To conclude, I have to say that anytime you can take an active interest to share one some time with your children, even playing games on a gaming console, it bridges time, mends fences, and warms hearts. If you can be comfortable while doing it, all the better! I whole-heartedly endorse the Pelican Eclipse Wireless Controller for XBOX!
