Kaboom!?
I was ready to laugh when a lady in an e-mail group I'm on was talking about a cleaning product she had recently tried called Kaboom! Porcelain, Tile and Grout Restorer. She said it was made by the same people who make Oxi-Clean and that it was amazing.
First off, I have never watched QVC or any other home shopping station nor purchased anything from said channels. I actually tended to laugh at anyone who actually bought that stuff. It couldn't be any good, the marketers were just good at convincing suckers.
When a few other ladies in the same e-mail group chimed in with their great experiences with Kaboom! I was a little more intrigued. I had just moved out of a house and needed to clean it before the new tenants arrived.
The place had been a disaster when we arrived, and no amount of scrubbing could get my shower/tub clean. I tried almost every cleaner on the market with very little to show for my effort. Since I really wanted the shower/tub to look good, I decided to try the new ‘wonder’ product.
Packaging
When I first saw Kaboom! on the shelf of my local Wal-Mart I was surprised at the bold look. The bottle was dark purple with the explosion/Kaboom! logo. There’s no way you can miss it on the shelf.
Instructions
Step #1—Apply to porcelain or tile surface either by direct spray or by sponge.
Step #2—Wait for 1-3 minutes.
Step #3—Rinse with water and then wipe the surface clean.
(Psst—Did you notice that nowhere in these directions would you find the word ‘scrub’?)
What Kaboom! Cleans
According to manufacturer information (from both the bottle and the Asseenontv.com website) Kaboom! will work on copper, brass, brass-plating, steel fixtures, tubs, toilets, sinks, walls, floors and more. You can use Kaboom! on almost any non-wood surface.
Kaboom! will clean off mineral deposits, soap scum, rust, iron or hard water stains, scale and lime.
How Well it Works
Uses and Instructions don’t mean a whole lot unless a product actually works, which is what I’m sure you’re wondering about right now.
The bathtub I was using Kaboom! on was terrible. It had very caked on soap scum and hard water deposits. I tried Scrub-Free Tile Cleaner, with only small improvements and (despite the name) a whole lot of scrubbing. This tub was beyond hope.
I sprayed the Kaboom! directly onto the shower walls, covering the entire shower thoroughly. I left the room to work on another part of the house for a few moments, and then returned.
At the bottom of the shower walls (where they meet the tub) where the Kaboom! fluid had dripped down there was a puddle of murky brown ‘ooze.’ I was a bit ‘creeped out’ (for lack of a better word) by the fact that this cleaner was supposed to be cleaning but was discoloring my shower. Then I realized this brown ‘ooze’ was actually the dirt and soap scum that was caked onto my shower walls. They were brighter, lighter, and for the first time shiny rather than dull.
The tub itself was what I was most worried about. The bottom has non-slip texturing in strips, and those strips of texturing were brown, very dark brown. I had scrubbed with Scrub-Free, Comet, and a host of other products with little success. While I can’t say that Kaboom! restored it to brand-new condition, it removed 90% of the ground-in grime.
After restoring my shower/tub to nearly new condition, I used Kaboom! on a small rust stain located in my bathroom sink. I again sprayed, waited, and wiped. The results were amazing, the rust stain was totally gone!
A Note on the Scent
I had originally forgotten to mention the scent in this review (thanks Freak369).
The scent on this cleaner is really pleasant. The bathroom I used it in had no windows, only a small vent fan (which I did use). Normally cleaning my bathroom (even with the fan) overwhelms me because of the fumes, but that wasn't a problem with Kaboom! The light citrus scent was very pleasing.
Recommendation
I have never had a cleaning product work as well as this one does! With minimal effort I was able to remove stains and discoloration that no amount of scrubbing with other cleansers was able to accomplish.
I highly recommend Kaboom! It worked wonders for me, and I’m sure it’ll do the same for you.
