Pros: Attractive, good sound, good features, coax antenna input, subwoofer level control.
Cons: None.
The Bottom Line: The Model 88 is a great radio for use in a room that's not easily served by a main stereo system. It offers great sound, easy operation, and good looks.

| TheBigPicture's Full Review: Cambridge Soundworks Model 88 Mini System |
I installed the Model 88 on a high shelf in my master bath after a complete remodel. The only other competing choice was the Bose Wave Radio, but I didn't feel the higher price of the Bose was justified in comparison to the 88. I still have a pair of KLH-17 stereo speakers from the early 70s, so I've known Henry Kloss' name for quite some time.
Because the unit is installed near a corner and near a high ceiling, bass buildup is significant due to its proximity to those surfaces. The subwoofer control on the back helped considerably to cut back on the excess bass. I then stuffed a piece of carpet padding into the bass port on the front; by adjusting the size of the plug I could better tune the bass.
The remote control does everything I need; it's light, water resistant (don't dunk it!), and its battery life is excellent. The six station presets make the unit even easier to operate. I didn't need AM reception, but having the coaxial antenna input was a necessity in my fringe reception area.
I paid only $150 for the unit, because Cambridge Soundworks was running two promotions at the time (Spring 2000). One was $50 off the $249 list price, the other was $50 for trading in any radio. I picked up a $2 garage-sale portable and saved $100 off the list price. Cambridge may run similar price promotions from time to time.
I plan to install another one when I add on my new kitchen next spring; it's so much easier than bothering with external speakers from a stereo system in the other room. (But this solution only works because I have a great FM station nearby that I can keep on all day without getting tired of it!)
