Pros: None so far
Cons: According to tech support, the Dxr3 decoder card will not work with certain monitors
The Bottom Line: I suppose if you don't have a ViewSonic 21" monitor, this product would be worth buying.

I purchased the retail version of CL's PC-DVD Encore 12X with the Dxr3 decoder card. After installing, my monitor screen was very dim and had a reddish hue to it. It was impossible to see my desktop, much less watch a movie. After spending 90 minutes on the phone with tech support and talking to 2 different support techs, they determined either the decoder card or the loopback cable was defective and that I should return the product under warranty. Afterall, I had only just opened the box and installed the components several hours earlier. I returned the original product in the retail box with all parts and documentation.
Two weeks later, I received a cardboard box containing all the components and manuals. I immediately noticed that everything was shipped loose - no retail box. After inspecting the drive and the card, I noticed that they looked used. The side of the drive had scratches like it had already been installed and the card's back metal plate was bent. Being that the letter accompanying the parts stated that the components were still under the original warranty, I reluctantly installed them. After experiencing the same video problems, I again contacted technical support. The tech's first question was regarding what monitor I was using. I told him it was a ViewSonic P810 21" and he told me that was my problem. After several questions as to why there is nothing mentioned on the box, in the user's manual, or on their website regarding incompatibility with certain monitors, I was told there was nothing he could do about it.
I cannot return the items to where I bought them because they are used and not in condition to be resold and, even if they were, I don't have the original retail box. Getting through to anyone other than technical support at Creative Labs is impossible. All complaints must be in writing and submitted by either fax or letter. To date, six working days later, I have not received either a telephone call, fax, or letter from Creative. I've got the feeling that I am going to get the short end of the stick and be out the $140 dollars I paid for this product.
I know that I can use software to play back DVD's, but I don't feel I should have to since I bought this kit with the decoder card so I wouldn't have to depend so much on my computer's CPU. On top of that, the software will cost me more money.
Unless Creative Labs refunds me the money I paid for this product, I cannot give them a good report. I have used Creative products in the past and have been very pleased with them. I hope they will do what's right.
